Patricia Altschul Shares an Update on Her Back Injury: “Back in Business”
The Southern Charm matriarch shared how she is doing after suffering from a “compression fracture of the spine.”
On Season 9, Episode 10 of Southern Charm, viewers learned that Patricia Altschul had experienced a back injury. The Grande Dame of Charleston revealed in a confessional that the incident happened abruptly, saying, “I got out of bed at 5 o’clock in the morning, and the next thing I knew, I was flat on my back in excruciating pain on the floor.”
What happened to Patricia Altschul on Southern Charm?
After consulting with a doctor about her strained back, it was determined that Patricia had suffered from a “compression fracture of the spine,” which resulted in her being on bed rest for a few weeks. Patricia also shared that the doctor said that it could take her at least “six months” to recover due to her age.
Despite the doctor’s healing timeline, the Southern Charm matriarch appeared to be in better health on the Season 9 finale, which aired on January 4, as she was a bit more mobile, thanks to her wheelchair use and having a personal caretaker.
In fact, Patricia joked that her nurse aide helped with her makeup routine, including “skin care, eyeliner, [and] a little blush.”

Taking to social media on December 24, Patricia shared a jolly clip of her dancing along to the longtime holiday hit, “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” by Mariah Carey. And judging by Patricia’s sassy moves on the dance floor, her back seems to no longer be causing her issues.
“A special thank you to all of the [Southern Charm] fans who sent get well wishes after seeing me with a spinal fracture on the show… either in bed or propped up in a chair,” she captioned the post.
Patricia continued to share that her little dance snippet is proof of letting her followers know that she’s officially “back in business.”
Patricia Altschul reunites with Michael "the Butler" Kelcourse
Frolicking on the dance floor isn’t the only thing keeping Patricia in a good mood. Most recently, she reunited with her former butler, Michael Kelcourse, for a quick bite to eat.
On December 14, Patricia posted an adorable photo of her and Michael, where they met up for lunch in Sarasota. As shown in the snapshot, Patricia was enjoying a martini while Michael opted for a glass of water with lemon, and the two had the biggest smiles on their faces.
Of course, Patricia was thrilled to be with her old friend, which she noted in her caption, writing, “First there was Covid.. then my back fracture so this is the first I’ve ever been able to spend time with Michael."
Michael showed his love back to Patricia by commenting, “Mrs. A visiting was the greatest gift I ever got."
