Mia Thornton Shares New Details on the Timeline of Her Separation from Gordon: "No One Knew"
The Real Housewives of Potomac cast member revealed she was "losing herself" in marriage to Gordon Thornton.
Back in September 2023, Mia Thornton announced that she and Gordon Thornton had separated after a decade of marriage. At the time, Season 8 of The Real Housewives of Potomac had already wrapped, but cameras picked back up to capture the aftermath of the couple’s divorce that is set to play out.
On the Season 8 finale of RHOP, which aired on March 24, viewers got to see Mia and Gordon have a candid discussion about their split, where she opened up about what led to their marriage downfall and when exactly they decided to go their separate ways.
When did Mia Thornton and Gordon Thornton separate?
Although Mia issued a statement to People revealing that she and Gordon had “separated” in the fall of 2023, the RHOP ‘Wife confirmed in a confessional on Season 8, Episode 18 that they initially parted ways in July 2023.
“No one knew,” she said. “Is [Gordon] hurt? Yeah, he doesn’t want me to divorce him. He doesn’t want me to stay with him…”

Mia Thornton addresses her marriage issues with Gordon Thornton
One of the issues that has been a struggle in Mia and Gordon’s marriage is their current financial woes, which she has spoken about previously by denouncing that she was "with Gordon for financial reasons.”
On the Season 8 finale, Mia addressed the matter again by revealing that wasn’t the reason she was walking away from her union with Gordon.
“If I were to be leaving my marriage because of financial reasons – I would’ve left seven or eight years ago,” she admitted in a confessional interview. “He was spending an excessive amount of money… and just not home, coming in at the middle of the night.”
As the paired argued about a variety of issues, including Gordon alleging Mia had an affair, Mia went on to note that her courage to leave stemmed from her being “tired” and the ill feeling of “losing" herself.

In the final moments of the episode, Mia reflected on her recent life adjustment of not having Gordon by her side and welcoming a new man into her life.
“This life that I’m living is not really the life that God is intending for me,” she added. “Like, I need to follow my heart, and whatever happens, happens.”

Mia’s new lover is her former ex, and they first dated before she met her now estranged husband, Gordon. The guy in question is also a radio host based in Atlanta named Incognito.
On New Year’s Eve 2023, Mia soft-launched her new beau on Instagram by posting a photo of her legs wrapped around him in front of a car.
Mia Thornton reveals when she knew she needed a divorce
During a recent chat with Page Six, Mia mentioned how her marital problems reached a point of no return after Gordon spoke to the press, where he revealed personal details of their relationship.
“I want to say my breaking point was when he publicly decided to shame me,” she told the news outlet about how his comments affected her.
Mia also mentioned how she refrains from speaking negatively about Gordon since they share two kids: son Jeremiah and daughter Juliana.
“I’m trying to reel him in and we need to work together as a family," she said. "We have these beautiful babies that we’re raising and being a mom is No. 1 for me. And I’m very proud to hold that title of being Supermom."
