Kate Chastain's Simple Parenting Hack Is Sure to Brighten Your Day
The Below Deck alum revealed how she kept her toddler preoccupied while enjoying "10 minutes of free time."
As a single parent and a first-time mom, Kate Chastain knows the struggle of carving out some “me time” — especially when you’re caring for an infant.
The Below Deck alum addressed the topic in a 2023 interview with Entertainment Tonight, just three months after giving birth to her baby boy, Sullivan Cay. Kate said she understood that having a newborn would be “a lot of work,” but underestimated just how hard it would be.
“I was not prepared for it. It is so much different than I expected, so much more difficult,” she said. “I love a challenge. But a lot of moms would DM me on social media over the years and be like, ‘I’m the chief stew in my house! I’m chief stew at my home! I’ve got three kids, I cook dinner, I’ve got to do their laundry and all their rooms and, you know, picnics...’ I said, yeah, I guess it’s kind of similar. Good for you, but now I’m like, I wish I could tell all of those moms you had it so much harder!”

Although she still has her hands full with nonstop mommy duties, Kate has clearly learned a lot over the past nine months. She demonstrated this in a recent Instagram video in which she shared a simple parenting hack that was both brilliant and LOL-inducing.
The clip showed Sullivan Cay sitting in a tiny ball pit that Kate placed in her living room. As The Traitors alum approached her little boy, a familiar cracking sound became increasingly louder. So, what was the source of the bizarre noise? You had to read the caption to find out.
“It’s important that children learn to solve problems,” she wrote. “Its also important that I have 10 minutes of free time. So I taped his toys down. I guess this makes us both problem solvers.”
“You’re doing a good job,” Kate said in the clip.

The Florida mom welcomed Sullivan Cay on May 5, 2023, about five months after she announced she was expecting. The former chief stew opened up about motherhood during a BravoCon 2023 panel, revealing it was Southern Charm’s Madison LeCroy who inspired her to have a baby.
“I told Madison this backstage, but this is so true. She’s the reason I had my son,” Kate said. “I found out I was pregnant, and I was like ‘What am I gonna do?’ I saw her on Instagram with her son, and I saw that mother-and-son relationship and I was like ‘I can do this.’ She inspired me.”
