Jeff Lewis Addresses Custody of Daughter Monroe Amid Separation from Gage Edward
"Oh, god, I don't even want to go there," the Flipping Out designer shared.
When Jeff Lewis shared the news that he and his partner, Gage Edward, had separated after a decade together during the January 31 episode of his Radio Andy show Jeff Lewis Live, he said the breakup had "been a long time coming." The Flipping Out couple had been living in separate rooms in their home for "a significant portion of last year" before Gage finally decided to move out on Wednesday.
One of the reasons why Jeff and Gage delayed their separation is their 2-year-old daughter, Monroe, who the couple welcomed into the world in October 2016. "I think the reason we hadn't ripped the Band-Aid off and actually separated is because A) we have the baby, and neither one of us want to leave the baby," Jeff explained, adding that "financially it wasn't the best time" because they have four properties they're working on, which are either under construction or ready to be sold.
Monroe is staying with Jeff in their Los Angeles home. "I'm now a single dad because the baby's with me," Jeff shared.
However, Jeff remains hopeful that he and Gage can one day get back on track. "I want to be very clear, and I said this to him, I'm like, 'I'm not throwing you out, I'm not breaking up with you, I'm here. You need time and space to get perspective,'" he said.
"And hopefully, he'll get the clarity to keep the family together," Jeff Lewis Live co-host and Jeff Lewis Design team member Megan Weaver added.
At the end of the show, a caller asked if Jeff and Gage, who are not married, have thought about a custody arrangement for Monroe if they do ultimately break up. "Oh, god, I don't even want to go there," he told the caller. "Honestly, I'm hoping that the guy wakes up. I'm hoping that he wakes up. I'm hoping that he sits in that hotel room alone, he misses his family, he misses his life, starts focusing on the positive and stops focusing on the negative. So let's just pray."
