Jennifer Welch Tells Us Exactly How to Execute a Room’s Finishing Touches
The Sweet Home design honcho says the devil is in the details!
This week, Sweet Home’s Jennifer Welch is guest editing BravoTV.com’s Home & Design. The interior design pro is schooling us on Room Revamp 101, so be sure to check back for more great tips each day. And don’t forget to tune in to the Sweet Home finale this Saturday at 9/8c.
OK, so we’ve got our furniture, rugs, and lighting all set up. The artwork is up, and while you might think you’re done, you’re not! We’ve got to tackle the finishing touches. You want to walk into a room and feel its effortless… effortlessly designed, and what’s really going to make that happen, to pull the whole room together are the finishing touches!
First, you need to add some really cozy, fabulous throws. Play around with their placement, too. First try placing it behind the back of the pillows and over the back of the cushions and see how that lays. Then try it over the arm — but never dead center in the couch, don’t do that. And the fold of the blanket shouldn’t be too messy or too neat. Too messy looks like you’re trying too hard, and too neat looks you care way too much.

Next up: candles and an orchid. You can get orchids at Whole Foods for, like, $9.99. Put one ice cube in it a week. I always kill them, but it is possible for them to last a while, and orchids always just give a room this really special touch, and they add height! Place them on a sofa table or coffee table.
Coffee table books also look great and they make you look well-traveled, well-read, and interesting. Bonus: They add height and dimension.
Another tip is if you have to have a lot of stuff — like a remote, a charger, whatever — get a decorative box, place it on your coffee table, and hide everything in there. Some people, like Pumps, she always has a lot of s--t with her. She has asthma inhalers and lighters and so on. If you’re a person who has to have a lot of stuff when you’re watching television or hanging out, put it all in one big decorative box, and then that’s just one item on the coffee table instead of 10.
And that’s a wrap — your room is officially finished!
