Jennifer Welch’s Guide to Prepping Your Room Revamp
The Sweet Home designer says organization (and planning ahead!) is the key to a successful design project.
This week, Sweet Home’s Jennifer Welch is guest editing BravoTV.com’s Home & Design. The interior design pro is schooling us on Room Revamp 101, so be sure to check back for more great tips each day. And don’t forget to tune in to the Sweet Home finale this Saturday at 9/8c.
Before you even purchase furniture, pick paint or hang artwork, your need to put thought into your room revamp. You’re likely going to be spending a chunk of change on this project, so let’s make sure you make the right decisions!
The main idea to focus on is blending. What you don’t want is for everything to be perfectly matched, but you do want to make sure all your pieces look good together. Here’s how: Once you’ve picked your favorite pieces from each store, create a mood board by pasting and copying the photos into a doc on your computer. You can drag a sofa over from West Elm and a chair from Restoration Hardware, a coffee table from Pottery Barn — and you’ll be able to see how they all look together on one page.

Another tip: A lot of these stores have fabric samples that they will let you take home, or if you don’t live in a place where they have a store, the customer service is great at all of these retailers, ask them to send you a fabric swatch! Print out your doc, and add your wall paint chips, too. That way you can really kind of play with your choices, see the colors and textures up close and determine if you’re hitting the mark overall. Seeing it all on paper will focus you in a way that your mind’s eye can’t, and it will help you make better decisions earlier, rather than mistakes later.
