“In 10 years [of yachting], I’ve never done that before,” the Below Deck Mediterranean chief stew said about the unconventional choice.

Jason Gaskell Would Have Made Kyle Viljoen Second Stew

On the Season 7 premiere of Below Deck Mediterranean, chief stew Natasha Webb made a decision that shocked her team, as well as viewers at home. “I don’t think there’s any need for a rank, because you’re both very experienced,” she told stews Kyle Viljoen and Natalya Scudder. Needless to say, they had some thoughts. After declaring, “I feel that I do deserve my rank,” Kyle concluded, “We can be joint second [stews].”

In a recent interview with BravoTV.com, Natasha shared that the unconventional choice was a first for her. “In 10 years [of yachting], I’ve never done that before,” she said. “But when Captain Sandy [Yawn] gave me Kyle and Natalya’s CVs, I [saw] they both have the exact same amount of experience, skills, qualities. Their CVs were both outstanding.”

Because she didn’t have a chance to see their skills in action before their first charter started, Natasha explained, “I thought, ‘I’m going to give them both a chance as second stew and see how it goes.’ They both were killing it and there was no reason to demote anyone, because they both did equally as an incredible job as each other.”

Although she generally feels “it’s important to have hierarchy” within her department, she was happy to make an exception in this case. “To make any one of them third stew would have, number one, caused arguments, because not one of them is worse than the other,” she said. “Number two, they both helped me like a second stew would help a chief stew. They both came to me with ideas [and] they both knew what needed doing and when.”

Looking back, Natasha has no regrets about the team structure. “There was never really an area of anyone overstepping anyone,” she explained. “I feel like I’m a good leader, and I knew exactly how to manage the situation, because I had two very strong personalities working [for me].”
