Here's What Roy Orbison Jr. Was Really Like as a Below Deck Med Charter Guest
Captain Sandy Yawn and David Pascoe dish on the returning guest's even more memorable charter in Season 6.
Season 6 of Below Deck Mediterranean got off to a chaotic start, and things have only gotten wilder for the Lady Michelle crew, thanks to the return of Roy Orbison Jr. as charter guest.
Captain Sandy Yawn and Malia White were excited to welcome Roy, his family, and friends back to Below Deck Med after he appeared as a charter guest in Season 5. When chief stew Katie Flood asked Malia if the guests were "hectic," the bosun told her that they were the opposite. "No, they're super chill, actually," Malia said.
The charter guests seemed to meet Malia's expectations when they first climbed aboard Lady Michelle in the July 19 episode of Below Deck Med. But then Roy brought the party as he started to imbibe on the yacht. That appeared to cause a bit of a stressful situation at the end of the episode as the crew docked the yacht at night.
Still, Captain Sandy said that it was "awesome" to have Roy back on board this season. She told The Daily Dish during an interview in June that she appreciated the opportunity to make this time extra special for Roy and his family since they experienced bad weather during his first Below Deck Med charter last season. "Having him back was, it was like getting to have a do-over," Captain Sandy said. "And they’re so kind and, oh, as you can see, he had a lot of fun."
Captain Sandy said that she would never stand in the way of charter guests enjoying themselves — with some exceptions, of course. "Oh, well, that’s their vacation. They can. They’re allowed, you know what I mean?" Captain Sandy said of seeing guests, in general, imbibe while on charter. "Here’s how we look at it: They’ve chartered the boat, so that’s their boat. They own it for that week, right? As long as they’re not breaking the law, they can do whatever they want. [If they're not] breaking the law or not hurting another person, they can do whatever they want. It’s their vacation."
Deckhand David Pascoe also shared how much he enjoyed having Roy on board this season. "From my POV [Roy] was nothing more than an incredible father and loving husband," he said in response to Below Deck Season 1 chief stew Adrienne Gang's tweet in defense of the charter guest having a good time aboard the Lady Michelle.
As much as the Below Deck Med crew members are fans of Roy and his famous father, the late music icon Roy Orbison, the charter guest told The Daily Dish podcast last year that he is "a big fan of the show." "These guys were magnetic," Roy said of his experience with the Season 5 crew, adding that his family was "really excited" to meet Captain Sandy. "I was almost embarrassed that we were [fans]. I was nervous in general because it's a big show, but I really trusted her," Roy said of Captain Sandy. "I trusted my babies to this staff and this crew, so they didn't make me feel nervous, and we had a lot of fun."
In fact, Roy still often shows his love for Below Deck Med on social media.
