Patricia Altschul Was Promised *This* by Whitney Sudler-Smith When Southern Charm Started
The Southern Charm matriarch opens up about her origins on the series.
When Whitney Sudler-Smith dreamed up the idea of Southern Charm back in the day, there was one person he wanted to make sure to capture the essence of: his mom, Patricia Altschul.
"He did tell me at the beginning, 'Just be on it for five minutes and that's all you have to do,'" she recently recalled to The Daily Dish about her origins on the show. "And now he says, 'Mother, please don't talk too much. Watch what you say. Edit what you say.' And, of course, I just say whatever pops into my head. But I think that gives him ulcers."
She describes her role as the matriarch of sorts to the group of pals as a "career" when what she really wanted to do when she moved to Charleston was relax and be fabulous. "Never in my wildest dreams," she said when asked if she ever imagined a life lived on TV. "I came to Charleston to sit on my chaise and eat bon bons and read trashy novels... and now he's got me working."
Five minutes has turned into six seasons for Patricia, and she noted that this season is as fiery and emotional as any that have come before. "This one contains surprises that nobody could have anticipated and I think that because of that, it's gonna be the best season. When you say people can't think this stuff up, it's true in relation to this season. It's going to be riveting," she said. "I can assure you it is anything but bland."
Well, make sure you tune into Season 6 every Wednesday at 8/7c. Preview, below.
