Below Deck Med's Mzi "Zee" Dempers Reveals Exactly How Painful That Fall Was
The deckhand shares if he had any injuries following the Season 6 tumble.
Working in yachting is physically demanding, and we sometimes see Below Deck crew members sustain injuries while on the job. However, one of the moments that has made everyone wince in Season 6 of Below Deck Mediterranean actually happened off the yacht during the Lady Michelle crew's night out.
In the July 26 episode, Mzi "Zee" Dempers and Courtney Veale memorably fell while out on the town in Croatia as he gave her a piggyback ride back to the yacht, which you can see in the above clip. Zee had appeared to have just cut his lip, which was bleeding onto his teeth.
But if you ask Zee what that fall felt like, he wouldn't really be able to tell you. "So I think I was just lucky in a sense that I was quite boozed that I didn't actually feel the pain that much. Like, I think it could have been a lot worse," Zee recalled during a recent interview with The Daily Dish. "When you are quite boozed, your body gets, like, relatively flimsy. So I think I was quite fortunate in that sense, that I didn't really feel it that hard, and I didn't actually hit my teeth, too."
Zee said that he remembered waking up with a "massive, massive lip" the next day, and he needed the help of crewmates like fellow deckhand Lloyd Spencer to fill him in on what exactly went down. "So I was just so confused. And I think Lloyd had actually walked me through being like, 'Do you not remember your massive fall?'" Zee said. "So I woke up in the morning just with a swollen sort of bust lip. But no teeth injuries or anything like that, which I think was quite lucky."
Now having watched the accident occur on Below Deck Med, Zee said that he is surprised his injuries weren't more severe. "Yeah, I mean, even watching it again, I'm just like, oh my god. You are so lucky that you didn't actually get your two front teeth gone, 'cause that's the way it sort of seems," he said. "Like, the impact also just seems very huge, so I think I was very lucky for the outcome, again."
Zee added that the moment "looks so much worse than it actually was, fortunately." "It looks extremely, extremely painful. It looks like [laughs] such a silly, silly thing that would happen," he shared. "But I guess [I couldn't] really have control over that at the time."
Just before the fall, we saw another instance of Zee and Courtney connecting as the two have flirted throughout the season. Zee opened up to The Daily Dish about why the third stew caught his eye early on. "I find that when people are genuine and who they are, I think that's one of the best qualities to have. And Courtney is to the bone just absolutely Courtney, and that's incredible," he said. "Obviously, she's a beautiful, beautiful girl, too. But I think sort of the main initial attraction is that she was just, like, authentically herself."
Zee and Courtney didn't waste any time in getting to know each other, even sharing some smooches during the crew's first night off. "So I remember waking up thinking, 'Oh, so this happened. Do I actually go and bring this up now? Or like, what do I [laughs] do? How do I go about this?'" Zee recalled of the morning after. "And I think to myself, I just chose to sort of, like, remain quiet and then just see how things played out."
Well, Courtney didn't actually remember that the two had kissed, later finding out that it happened more than once during an interview in the July 19 episode. "[Seeing] how she reacted in the interviews, it's all a bit of a laugh," Zee said. "So yeah, it was just funny to see."
As for what the future holds for Zee and Courtney, the deckhand said, "I think you'll just have to see how the season transpires."
