Everything Mzi Dempers Has Done Since Below Deck Mediterranean Season 6

It's time to reconnect with everyone's favorite deckhand.

By Sophie Vilensky

Mzi "Zee" Dempers was first introduced to fans during Season 6 of Below Deck Mediterranean. The first item on his to-do list in Episode 1? Teaching his crew members how to say his name.

“Mu-zee, but Zee is cool," he said.

The second item? Learning how to be a deckhand.

"This boat's a big jump for me, as it’s something I’ve never really experienced. So I’m very very nervous," he shared. "I am the youngest of five siblings. I’m adopted."

"Seeing paths that my brothers have taken has inspired me quite a bit," he added. "The oldest has been yachting for about 20 years now, and he’s now a captain."

Spoiler alert: Zee did a great job during his two Bravo-broadcast charter seasons. But what exactly is the yachtie up to these days? Keep scrolling to find out what he's doing, including the current status of his friendship with Courtney Veale.

What happened to Mzi Dempers on Below Deck Mediterranean?

After Mzi donned the wrong uniform after boarding the boat in Season 6, Malia White noted that she didn’t realize he was that green of an employee. Nevertheless, she was excited to teach him as she herself was taught — and he was a quick learner.

While on the show, Mzi grew incredibly close to stewardess Courtney Veale. Fans first saw a hint of their relationship during Season 6, Episode 6, when they flirted during Mzi’s birthday party and eventually ended up locking lips.

“Love at first sight, love at first night,” joked Mzi.

Later in the season, when asked if she liked Mzi, Courtney said that she felt “like they have a good friendship thing going.” Mzi tried to surprise her with flowers, but the gesture fell flat. Still, they were able to salvage their friendship, and remain close to this day.

“We just have such an amazing friendship,” explained Courtney in a September 2022 interview with Cheat Sheet. “I’m so glad nothing else kind of happened from that season because I do feel like I would have lost him as a friend.”

When he eventually returned for Season 7 after quarantining in Malta (he was a bit late, but he made it!), he had his childhood friend Storm Smith by his side.

“You know, I saw a lot of potential and growth in Zee,” shared Captain Sandy Yawn ahead of Zee's return. “To bring him back and to watch him flourish will be an incredible feeling.”

What does Mzi Dempers do for work today?

During a July 2022 conversation with the yachting site Meridian, Zee opened up about his post-Season 7 plans.

"I’ve been back at the home for the past couple of months instructing courses for people wanting to get into the yachting industry, so the next step for me is join a boat in the States, and then complete my Yacht Masters at the end of this year, and hopefully look to take the next step in my career soon," he noted. "Also currently working on a project which aims at giving back from the knowledge I have gained over the years and experiences I have had, to giving people less fortunate, and minorities within the industry an opportunity to get involved."

As for if we'll see him on a TV screen again?

"I hope so," Zee said during an appearance on the Below Bravo podcast in May 2023. "I would absolutely enjoy to do another season."

"If I was asked to come back I certainly would," he added.

During the 2023 interview, Zee also confirmed he'd completed his Yacht Masters.

"I'm trying to get a bosun role, and then from there do my next set of courses," he explained. "It's quite a long journey that you need to go to, to get to the top."

Where does Mzi Dempers live?

While his career takes him all over the world, Mzi is from South Africa. After the Season 7 charter season finished, he returned to the country he grew up in, sharing gorgeous photos of the landscape to his Instagram story.

"Never gets old," he wrote over one snapshot of a sunset.

Is Mzi Dempers still friends with the Below Deck Mediterranean cast?

According to his BravoTV.com bio, Zee’s "contagious laughter and lovable spirit make him the life of every party." And, his fellow cast members quickly fell in love with him.

"Everyone is still relatively close, I'd say. We do keep tabs on each other all the time," Zee said during his Below Bravo interview. "And I do think, just from the show, that that doesn't happen too often."

According to a very cute social media interaction in September 2023, he and Veale were planning a trip to Mexico together. He's also shared photos with Season 7 crew mate Natalya Scudder and continues to be pals with Storm, who he's known since age 13.
