Tom Schwartz Revealed the “Uncomfortable” Way Max Told Him About the Katie Hookup
Tom Schwartz broke down his reaction to learning Katie hooked up with his close friend.
Vanderpump Rules fans had their hair blown back when they learned Katie Maloney had previously hooked up with former castmate and Tom Schwartz's close friend Max Boyens.
Boyens, once the general manager at Tom Tom — the West Hollywood restaurant co-owned by Tom Schwartz and Tom Sandoval — quickly copped to the fling with Katie, according to the cast on the Vanderpump Rules After Show. Sitting alongside Sandoval and The Valley’s Jax Taylor, Schwartz spilled the tea about how he learned one of his closest friends was getting together with his ex-wife, as seen in Vanderpump Rules Season 10, Episode 9.

Jax questioned how Schwartz approached Max after Brock Davies broke the news.
“[Max] actually called me, I think, like, five days later, and I can tell he felt so uncomfortable,” Schwartz said. “We went and got lunch in the Valley, and he’s like, ‘Dude, I’m so sorry. Literally f-cking alcohol, proximity…’ I think Katie was — I’m not saying she was the aggressor; I think it was mutual, but I think Katie was on a mission.”
Katie — whose divorce from Schwartz was finalized in October 2022 — said hooking up with Max wasn’t on her “bucket list.”
“There was more flirting on his part,” Katie said. “I’ll put it that way.”

Later in the After Show, Jax gave his account of how he learned about the tryst.
“[Max] texted me, and he’s like, ‘I did something really f-cked up,’” said Jax. “He was like, ‘There was a disco ball, [it was] four in the morning.’”
“I know that disco ball. In our apartment?” Schwartz half-laughed. “That was our disco ball.”
When did Katie hook up with Max?
In Season 11, Episode 9, Brock told Schwartz that Katie “left with someone” from Schwartz’s “friend group” during an event just nights before (this was in the summer of 2023). When Schwartz asked who the mystery man was, Brock said, “It’s your boy, bro.”
Brock and others said they expected more of a reaction from Schwartz upon learning his “best friend… f-cking banged your ex-wife,” as James Kennedy so gently put it during the After Show.
“Even in a crazy rom-com movie, this would be insane,” James admitted.
It throws a wrench in whatever relationship exes Schwartz and Katie have, especially since Katie — in earlier seasons of Vanderpump Rules — repeatedly requested Schwartz not date or hook up with anyone in their friend group. Schwartz was recently suspected of being in a relationship with his roommate, Jo Wenberg, and was more recently romantically linked to TikTok creator Sophia Skoro.

How did Tom Schwartz find out about Max and Katie
Katie blamed Scheana Shay for “literally creepin’” on Max Boyens, which was how the rest of the group learned about the pair’s one-night stand.
Jax said Scheana probably had a hunch after seeing Katie and Max grow “frisky” over some drinks, prompting her to do “some MacGyver sh-t,” or what Schwartz referred to as “sleuthing.”
“Max and I are very good friends,” said the Scheananigans podcast host. “We talk often, and we have shared locations with each other for a couple of years now.”
According to Scheana, Max contacted her first because he saw she was nearby in Melrose Place. Scheana then invited him to come and hang out.
“I feel a vibe between him and Katie, and I’ve felt this before when I’ve hung out with the two of them,” Scheana told Kristen Doute.
That night, via phone tracking, Scheana realized Max hadn’t made it home that evening. In response, she sent him a text, which was met with a “weird emoji.” Upon closer inspection, Scheana found Max was at Katie’s building before she “finally put it together.”
Scheana checked Max’s location the following day and found he was still at Katie’s apartment — which is also where Kristen currently lives with Luke Broderick.
Katie was unhappy that Scheana claimed to have found out while ensuring Max made it home safely.
“Scheana, he wasn’t going f-cking home,” Katie told After Show producers. “That is such a f-cking lie.”
Ariana Madix also called B.S. on Scheana’s claims that Scheana wanted to make sure Max got home and subsequently stumbled on his location by happenstance.
“You weren’t worried about me; I didn’t get a text,” Katie continued. “She has zero shame about what she was doing while she was doing it.”
