On Tuesday, March 19, 2024, Karen left a dinner for home. She swerved to avoid a deer and totaled her car along Oaklyn Drive in Potomac around 11:40 p.m., according to show producers, and was taken into custody that night. She now faces eight charges in relation to the crash.

“My heart absolutely sank,” Ashley Darby said on the Season 9 premiere preview. “I didn’t even understand the full magnitude of what had happened.”

“Karen and I have been friends for a long time,” Gizelle Bryant added. “I care about her. I love her. I’m going to be there for her for whatever she needs.”

Karen herself addressed the incident, as seen in the preview of the premiere. Keep reading to see how she, the other ‘Wives, and Karen’s husband, Ray, is handling what happened.

Karen Huger Answers Gizelle Bryant's Questions About the Crash

Gizelle told Ashley that she was going to pick up Karen and take her out to lunch in the opening moments of the Season 9 premiere.

“She hasn’t been out of the house, really. So, I kinda want to see how she’s feeling,” Gizelle explained.

But Karen said she’s had time to reflect in the month since she was in the crash.

“While I cannot talk about things in detail since the case has not been adjudicated, I will say this: The injuries, thank God, are not life threatening. It’s my ribs and my ankle and that’s it. Thank God,” Karen said in her confessional. “I know the value of life more now than ever.”

Sitting down to have food, Gizelle told Karen she felt like they needed to have a “real conversation,” since Gizelle didn't believe Karen does “stupid stuff.”

“It was uncharacteristic of the Karen that I know," Gizelle told her.

But Karen indicated she was unable to go into detail about what happened, or reveal if she was going to court, telling Gizelle, “It’s a legal matter.”

“You can read,” Karen responded. “Just stop. You know better. I will talk about it when I can.”

Karen explains how she and Ray are dealing with the crash

Gizelle also asked Karen how her husband, Ray, was doing after the crash.

“We are going through a lot. And I can’t blame him for any of it,” Karen said. “And I blame myself for not speaking up before now. I need him to be there emotionally, so whatever he’s capable of doing, I’m just asking for the emotional support.”

Karen explained more in-depth about what her mindset was like during the crash.

“I think everything that I’m going through contributed to my accident. Grief. Marriage problems,” Karen said in her confessional. “Everything has something to do with where I’m at emotionally right now which was the state I was in during that incident.”

Karen also said to Gizelle her parents’ deaths played a role in what happened.

“I held Ray down when he went through what he went through,” Karen said. “Mommy passes. Seven months later, I buried my father. I never really took care of me.”
