Connie Britton Says Debra Newell's Most Wonderful Quality Is Also the Most Harmful
After meeting the real-life Debra Newell, Britton now understands her Dirty John character better than ever.
Actress Connie Britton understands her Dirty John character, Debra Newell, all too well. After taking on the role in Bravo's limited series, Britton met with the real-life Debra. In just a short time, the actress was able to truly understand her character's motivation.
"Debra — and I know this about her having been able to meet her and spend time with her — she sees the good in everybody," Britton revealed in Dirty John After the Episode. "Debra recognized that as that classic thing where sometimes our most wonderful quality is also our most harmful quality."
In episode 2 of Dirty John, it becomes abundantly clear that Debra isn't noticing the warning signs that John Meehan (Eric Bana) may not be such a good guy.
"The things that were important to [Debra] about John were fulfilled, and so she wasn't worrying so much about the 'red flags,'" she explained.
