KFC Sells Out its Vegan Fried "Chicken" in Just 5 Hours — With Diners Waiting in 2-Hour Lines
While the chicken sandwich wars rage between Popeyes and KFC... this happened.
Unless you're living in a cave in which there is neither fast food nor access to Wi-Fi, you're probably aware, even as a casual observer, of the grease-drenched and much-tweeted-about war raging between KFC and Popeyes and their fans over the chains' dueling chicken sandwiches. (Plenty of Bravolebs like Cynthia Bailey and Brielle Biermann have registered their reviews publicly.) Meanwhile, a bit more quietly, KFC rolled out another new product — and it quickly proved itself a very serious contender into the fast-food chicken menu item game. Or "chicken" game, that is.
On Tuesday, KFC rolled out plant-based vegan chicken — making it the first national fast-food chain to do so. Partnering with Beyond Meat (which has seen its stock prices soar since IPO earlier this year) “Beyond Fried Chicken” is available only in Atlanta — at just one location for now — as KFC executes a test.
But when doors swung open there, it was only the early birds who got the vegan bird: Lines wrapped the building, and Beyond Fried Chicken sold out in less than five hours.
Some diners on scene reported lines two hours long, and would-be patrons turned away at the drive-through window.
Behold the bounty earned by the lucky few:
KFC told The New York Times that it sold as many of the Beyond menu items that day as it would normally sell of its popcorn chicken in the span of an entire week.... and called it a "Kentucky Fried Miracle."
