DC Restaurant Apologizes After Backlash to Its Bottomless Drinks Deal During Kavanaugh Hearing
Twitter found the whole thing rather tone deaf.
Fail.
A Washington D.C. restaurant has been forced to issue its customers an apology after it ran a special that went over badly. Shaw's Tavern announced on social media that it would run a promotion for bottomless mimosas for patrons who came in to watch testimony of Christine Blasey Ford and Brett Kavanaugh during what was sure to be an emotional and extremely high-stakes day.
But given the allegations against the Supreme Court nominee involve "blackout" drinking and intensely serious subject matter — and while the testimony was compelling TV, but was not, actually, a football game — Twitter found the whole thing rather tasteless.
One Twitter user urged the restaurant to "read the room."
Another called the whole thing just "not a great look."
Womp womp.
The restaurant has since deleted the tweet that had announced it would be “open at 10 a.m. for the hearing. Bar service starts at 11 a.m. with bottomless mimosas.”
Its subsequent apology clarified that the promo was more of a case of misinterpreted intention than a bad joke. And it announced that it will donate all of the day’s proceeds to the anti-sexual assault nonprofit RAINN.
