Why Captain Glenn Shephard Is “Starting to Worry” About Chef Cloyce: “What’s He Thinking?”
The Below Deck Sailing Yacht captain isn't pleased with Cloyce Martin after the chef unexpectedly left the boat.
We're only three episodes into Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5, but there's no shortage of drama. The most recent issue? Chef Cloyce Martin's decision to hang with guests instead of doing meal prep — which Captain Glenn Shephard didn't appreciate.
During Season 5, Episode 3, Cloyce went on an excursion with guests. After Glenn realized Cloyce wasn't on the yacht less than an hour before mealtime, the captain began to stress and went looking for him.
"Cloyce, are you in here?" he asked, knocking on the door of Cloyce's cabin. Naturally, there was no response as the chef was still out on the water.
Next, Glenn radioed the crew at the outing. "Does anyone know where Chef is?" he asked. After hearing that Cloyce had been in the water with the crew since setup, Glenn wasn't thrilled.
"What?!" he asked. "What the f-ck's going on?" He then demanded they bring him back that instant.
"He's not out there to have fun," he added. "He has to be ready to serve at 4."
In a confessional, the captain explained more of his qualms with the young professional.
"He's gotta understand he's here for a purpose. He's not a guest," he said. "I like strong people around me that I can trust. And right now I'm starting to worry. What's he thinking?"
About half an hour before Glenn really began stressing about Cloyce's whereabouts, he explained that the crew was working with limited time.
"What I'm worried about is we're a bit pressed for time now. Guests eat at 4 and we are still leaving at 5," he said (at 2:40 p.m. to be exact).
Walking through the galley before service, he noticed there wasn't much, if any, prepping that had been done ... which is why he went to Cloyce's bunk to investigate his whereabouts in the first place.
Why did Chef Cloyce Martin leave the yacht before lunch service?
Before the guests left for the excursion, Cloyce told Daisy Kelliher, "Seriously, I would quite enjoy going."
Daisy was confused by the idea, asking, "How are you gonna get lunch [done] if you're gone?"
Cloyce wasn't worried. "Salad is prepped," he said. "I'm gonna throw the chicken and the salmon in the oven. And that right there is a light lunch.
As he left, he explained in an episode interview, "I am not only stoked to be able to offer my assistance to the deck team, but after quite a few days of hard work, getting some of that fresh, Spanish sunshine is quite lovely."
Captain Glenn Shephard reacts to Cloyce and Daisy's tension
Glenn isn't the only one with growing concerns about Cloyce. Earlier in the episode, the chef and Daisy had a miscommunication over dessert service — and Glenn took note.
The squabble was just the latest in the ongoing drama between the chief stew and the chef. On the Season 5 premiere, as Glenn watched Daisy and Cloyce struggle through a dinner service, he declared, "If tonight is any indication of Cloyce and Daisy's inter-departmental relationship, what I'm seeing now has got me worried."
