Christian Siriano Reacts to Project Runway Designer's Comment to Karlie Kloss
The Project Runway mentor is living proof of the importance of being respectful to the judges.
Project Runway designer Tyler Neasloney caused a stir earlier in Season 18 with his "not even to dinner with the Kushners" remark after judge and designer Brandon Maxwell said he couldn't see host Karlie Kloss wearing what ended up being the losing look that episode anywhere.
Mentor Christian Siriano was backstage when everything went down, and he shared his reaction to the buzzy moment during his appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen on February 6. "The challenge for me is whenever you're overly aggressive toward the judges, like it's just not great for you. Karlie's not gonna be like, 'Please, let me wear your dress on the cover of Vogue next week,' if you're sassy to her," Christian explained. "So I would not do that. But that's just me."
Andy Cohen then noted that Christian seemed to have "a lot of attitude during [his] season." "But never to them," the CFDA designer replied. "I was always very respectful to them because I think at the end of the day — especially Nina [Garcia]. Nina is the editor-in-chief of ELLE. Your work will never be used ever."
Christian said that Heidi Klum also wore his designs "immediately" after his time on Project Runway, and she still does to this day. So he agreed with Andy that "it makes a difference" how you interact with the judges during the competition. "It really does, especially if you want to be actually successful after the show's over," Christian said.
Karlie addressed Tyler's comment when she appeared on WWHL on January 16. "Well, listen, I was honored to be one of the first memes of the decade," she said. "But, honestly, the real tragedy of this whole thing is that no one is talking about how terrible that dress was. That's why he went home! And no, I would not wear that dress to any kind of dinner."
Christian praised Karlie for her "amazing" response during his appearance on WWHL.
Tyler apologized to Karlie on the runway after he was eliminated from the competition. He later clarified his comment during an interview with The Daily Dish last month, sharing that he has "a lot of respect for Karlie" and his remark "was entirely related to the aesthetic of the look."
"I'm not a nasty person. I thought we were on a friendly enough playing field. So Karlie, at the end of the day, she's a human, so I don't want her to just hate me or feel awful about what I said," Tyler said. "I set the record straight at the end of the episode, so I really sincerely hope there are no hard feelings."
Christian and Tyler reflect more on the moment in the Project Runway Season 18 After Show, above.
