Malia White Reacts to the Below Deck Med Crew's Hot Tub Conflict
Captain Sandy Yawn also shares her thoughts after seeing the drama unfold in the latest episode of Below Deck Med.
After an intense episode of Below Deck Mediterranean, Malia White reflected on the events of the Lady Michelle crew's night off on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen.
While speaking virtually with host Andy Cohen and fellow guest Courtney Veale during the July 26 episode of WWHL, Malia shared her perspective on what she believed to be the root of the conflict with Lexi Wilson that night. "I think it was probably a mixture of everything. I think she had a lot going on, especially with, you know, the passing of her dad so recently," Malia explained in the above clip. "And then alcohol kind of fueled everything."
Lexi's comments to Lloyd Spencer in the hot tub also "kind of fueled it for the deck crew," according to Malia, who confirmed that the deckhand was "shaken up" by the moment. "You know, some of the things that she was saying to Lloyd were extremely inappropriate to the point that he kind of, like, had tears in his eyes," Malia recalled. "He got out and left the hot tub because he just didn't want anything to do with it."
Malia also said that she was confused by Lexi telling her to "stand the f--k down" since the bosun technically has a higher rank on the yacht than the second stew.
Andy also asked Courtney, looking back, who she thought "was in the wrong" during the hot tub drama. "Yeah, obviously, Lexi was in the wrong at the time. It was a really weird drunken situation that escalated out of nothing," Courtney said. "And obviously, I was very drunk, so it just went from zero to 100 pretty quick, and I didn't really know what was going on. So I was just in the middle of trying to not leave her on her own, but not take any sides."
As for what later transpired in the crew mess, Courtney said that she was asleep in her cabin at the time. "But I was pretty shocked when I heard about it the next day," she said.
Later during the WWHL After Show, Malia clarified her interactions with Lexi on deck that night. "I think some people were asking me why didn't I just leave Lexi alone. And, you know, for me, when I told her to get the eff off the deck it's because it was a safety concern," she said in the below clip, adding that she didn't want Lexi to be alone in the hot tub after she had been drinking.
Courtney added that, now after watching the episode, she would have handled things differently that night. "Yeah, I mean, I was definitely shocked to watch it back to see how kind of horrible Lexi was being, and if I hadn't been so drunk, then I probably would have dealt with the situation a bit better," she shared. "But it is what it is."
Captain Sandy Yawn, who was not present for any of the aforementioned crew conflict, later shared her reaction to the episode on Twitter on July 26. "Obviously a tough episode to watch. I see it when you see it," she tweeted. "A lot happened that I am not aware of at that time, and a lot more is still to come."
Lexi opened up to The Daily Dish in an exclusive interview prior to the July 26 episode of Below Deck Med airing and explained that her frustration with the crew's disagreement over the bill at the restaurant spilled over into her interactions with Malia that night, both in their cabin and later in the hot tub. The stew said that she "was responding to things that [were] said to me" during the night and that she "wasn’t just arguing for the sake of arguing."
She also noted how much she was going through at the time, including the passing of her father just a few months prior to the start of the charter season. "I definitely wasn't in the right headspace. And I had a s--t ton of stuff going on in my head, like a lot of stuff, but I didn't tell anyone, which is my fault. And I guess I wasn't dealing with it properly, which is also my fault," Lexi said. "In that short space, you know, 15-hour working days, a lot going on, and just, like, alcohol doesn't make it better. I had a lot going on with my dad. I'm still reeling with emotions there. Any little thing triggered me, like out of control, actually."
Lexi said that "anything would've upset" her that night, and now looking back, she would have taken a different approach to the situation, including taking some alone time away from the rest of the crew. "I would've just went into my room, wouldn't even go up to the hot tub, wouldn't even have gone outside. I think that would have cooled me off," she shared. "Had I just dealt with Malia separately and just stayed in my room and not continued those activities, I think everything could've been avoided."
