A Surprise Proposal, a Wedding Dress ... Was This the Most Romantic Emmys Ever?
Was love the real winner last night?
It seems that the Emmys always top the Oscars — and not just because they’re more fun. But Monday night’s show was possibly the most romantic in recent memory, with so many in-love couples, a reworked wedding dress, and a proposal in front of millions.
A wedding dress reinvented.
A braless Alex Borstein won the Emmy for outstanding supporting actress for her role on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and scooped up her trophy in a plunging silver gown with flared sleeves. But it wasn’t new and it wasn’t couture. She wore it when she married her now ex-husband two decades ago. “This is actually my wedding dress,” the star told Glamour magazine on the Emmys red carpet. “This was from 20 years ago. The marriage didn’t last but the dress did and I wanted to give it new life so now it’s my Emmys dress. That’s the truth.” Fantastic.
John Mulaney thanks his wife.
If you don’t know who John Mulaney is, your head's been under a rock. If you don’t know his wife, you’re really missing out. Annamarie Tender Mulaney, makeup artist and Victorian lampshade maker extraordinaire, played a huge part of the comedian’s acceptance speech. If you’ve seen his standup you know how she is. Amazing.
Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel are the best looking people on Earth.
That’s all. You have eyes.
John Legend and Chrissy Teigen being together forever.
If these two ever break up, there’s no hope for humanity. Since John just completed his EGOT win, Chrissy was asked on the red carpet if there’s anything John can’t do (in front of John) and she says, “there’s a laundry list.” God love her.
Scarlett Johansson and Colin Jost still going strong.
It’s nice to see an A-lister and a TV star managing to make it work. He’s smart, she’s sexy, and they actually look very happy together.
Antonio Banderas makes a shocking statement.
Entertainment Tonight caught up with the 58-year-old actor at an Emmys after-party, and he spoke about Melanie Griffith, his former wife of nearly 20 years. (He had been nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie for his role in Genius.)
"Melanie is my dear friend and she just texted me. She was really sorry that I didn't win. So we're going to see each other this week because she's still my family and my kids," he said of the 61-year-old actress, who he divorced in 2015. "I will love that woman until the day I die."
*That* surprise proposal.
Oscars director Glenn Weiss accepted an Emmy for directing for a variety special—and during his speech he proposed to his girlfriend, Jan Svendsen.
“You wonder why I don’t like to call you my girlfriend? Because I want to call you my wife,” he said to a standing ovation. She accepted.
