MacKenzie Bezos Is Giving Away Nearly Half of Her Divorce Settlement — That's $17 Billion
The ex-wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is making a major philanthropic move.
After 25 years of marriage, the ink is now dry on the divorce papers between Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and MacKenzie Bezos, and she's going to give away almost half of her $37 billion dollar settlement to charity.
"My approach to philanthropy will continue to be thoughtful," she wrote in a letter announcing that she's signing The Giving Pledge and will donate at least $17 billion to various causes. TMZ pointed out Jeff has yet to follow in the footsteps of MacKenzie and other billionaires like Bill and Melinda Gates by signing The Giving Pledge, which encourages wealthy individuals to give away half their fortunes. (In fact, he's the only one of the top five richest Americans to NOT sign it.)
"It will take time and effort and care. But I won’t wait. And I will keep at it until the safe is empty,” MacKenzie wrote.
Jeff Bezos, who is in a relationship with his alleged onetime mistress, TV host Lauren Sanchez, tweeted a message of support for MacKenzie's announcement.
"MacKenzie is going to be amazing and thoughtful and effective at philanthropy, and I'm proud of her. Her letter is so beautiful. Go get 'em MacKenzie."
No word if he's putting his own money where his mouth is.
