This Is What It's Like to Do Jennifer Lopez, Britney Spears, and More Celebs' Nails
Tom Bachik has polished the most A-list nails.
Tom Bachik often holds Kim Kardashian West's hands. And Jennifer Lopez's. And Selena Gomez's. And Mila Kunis'. Tha's just the norm for OPI’s global ambassador.
The celebrity manicurist — aka “The Mani-curist” — has been perfecting the nails of the Hollywood elite for years. He’s worked with everyone from Kendall Jenner to Heidi Klum to Kerry Washington to Gwyneth Paltrow and more.
With two decades of experience under his belt, the nail artist is now assisting OPI’s product development, marketing and education teams.
We figured we could use a lesson or two, too. So, instead of picking our nails, The Lookbook picked Bachik’s brain for painting tips, tricks, and his roster of ridiculously beautiful clients. Read on for his advice and secrets.
Who was the first celebrity you ever worked with?
Tom Bachik: The first celebrity that I remember working with is Britney Spears. It was in 2003 for the cover of Rolling Stone with photographer Matthew Rolston. I was super excited — a bit star struck — and had a total fanboy moment, until [Spears] smudged her polish again for the third time, absentmindedly running her hands through her hair while talking on the phone. Buy hey, that's why I was there!
Which celeb has the best nail style?
Wow, this is tough because so many of my clients have such great personal style and their nails are a big part of it. I'm going to go with J.Lo because she's always wanting something new and fresh, and she looks to me to bring it to her. In some cases, when you change up your nails for different events and occasions, three to four times a week, you have to be on point.
Whose nail style has evolved the most?
Again, I'm going to go with J.Lo, simply because she is always trying something different. We recently changed her shape from the iconic, long, stiletto tips to a classic, modern take on old Hollywood: shorter, softer, and more elegant is her vibe now.
What is one thing women are doing wrong when it comes to taking care of their nails?
If I had to pick one thing, it would be not hydrating nails daily. The daily rigors of our lives can leave hands and nails very dehydrated, especially with most hand washes being antimicrobial. Simply using cuticle oil nightly can help prevent hangnails, nails from peeling, and polish from chipping. Try OPI ProSpa Nail and Cuticle Oil to protect and strengthen.
Should we let our nails "breathe" in between manicures (aka go without polish)?
No, it is not necessary. Nails are dead keratin and do not breathe. Nails from from the matrix area below the cuticle, and what you apply to the surface in the big picture does not affect the nails. How products are applied and removed has more of an effect.
