Captain Sandy Yawn Says She Once Threatened to Quit Below Deck Med
“Let her drive the boat if she thinks she’s the captain," the Below Deck Med boss said at BravoCon.
Captain Sandy Yawn has been the fearless leader of the Below Deck Mediterranean crew for the past three seasons after climbing aboard the Sirocco to lead the team beginning in Season 2. However, there was one moment during her time on Below Deck Med that almost made Captain Sandy want to say goodbye to it all.
Remember when Hannah Ferrier had "one Coke" too many while out with the charter guests instead of returning to the boat right away back in Season 3? Not only did that cause Captain Sandy to lose her cool on-camera, like we saw during the episode, but she also threatened to quit the charter season, she revealed during the Below Deck: Get Nauti panel at BravoCon on Sunday, November 17.
“Let her drive the boat if she thinks she’s the captain," Captain Sandy recalled of her feelings about Hannah in that moment, as reported by Decider, during the panel at the Manhattan Center in New York City, which also featured João Franco, Colin Macy-O'Toole, and producer Nadine Rajabi. “She’s insubordinate, she doesn’t listen."
Captain Sandy also said she told Rajabi at the time, “I’m gonna walk off this boat and Hannah can dock it."
Captain Sandy and Hannah were able to resolve their differences prior to Season 3 of Below Deck Med. So when Season 4 came around, they seemed to be getting along swimmingly... well, until Captain Sandy came down on Hannah for her tablescapes and questioned her passion for the yachting industry toward the end of the season.
Though Hannah was visibly upset by Captain Sandy's criticism during the charter season, the two ended on good terms. Hannah even said she understood where Captain Sandy was coming from during the Below Deck Mediterranean Season 4 After Show, above.
"To me, Sandy's position and the deck crew, I can understand how they can be passionate and want to move up the ladder and things," she said. "I am passionate about traveling and earning money. I'm passionate about the guests. I love giving the guests a really good experience and seeing them leave and having a good time. Table decor, cleaning toilets, making beds — [I'm] not so passionate about."
Captain Sandy ultimately praised Hannah for her work last season of Below Deck Med, tweeting after the Season 4 finale, "Although it wasn’t always smooth sailing, @HannahFerrier put out some amazing décor this last charter. She is an incredible person and a wonderful chief stew! Thank you for your hard work this season."
