Karen Huger Finally Answered the One Question You Have About Her Friend Matt Byars
Karen Huger explains how she knows the buzzy Real Housewives of Potomac regular.
Of the many mysteries of The Real Housewives of Potomac, Karen Huger's relationship with Matt Byars is one that's really had us scratching our heads. Since bearing witness to Karen's "press conference" last season of RHOP, Matt has been referred to as the grand dame's friend, "assistant," part of her management team, her "everything," and her "attorney," according to Ashley Darby.
Matt was right by Karen's side again in the RHOP Season 4 premiere as she received a peace offering in the form of homemade cookies from Gizelle Bryant. All of our questions about how Karen actually knows him promptly came flooding back to us.
So when The Daily Dish caught up with Karen in New York City prior to the RHOP Season 4 premiere, we had to ask the grand dame herself what the deal is with Matt. "I’ve known Matt since he was about 17, 18 years old. I encourage Matt when life is difficult. A lot of people call me 'Mama Karen' in Potomac because I love helping young folk," Karen explained. "When life was trying to him, I reached out and told him to go to school, and he did, and now we work together."
Karen went on to elaborate on her professional relationship with Matt. "Matt is wonderful, wonderful in PR. I do have a PR, Matt is not my PR, but I would say that Matt is in a line of my agent, my booking person, and it works for me," she said. "I met some dynamic people through this powerful young man, who’s extremely connected. And my personality and his connections just work so well, and I’m blessed to have Matt in my life."
And Karen isn't kidding. Head over to Matt's Instagram, and you'll see that he's rubbed elbows with just about every celebrity you can think of, including several Real Housewives. "Oh my god, he’s with everyone! And I love that. He’s a bubbly person and, again, a very successful young man and powerfully connected. I don’t mess with peons," Karen told The Daily Dish. "Matt’s a good guy and us together, two powerhouses together, we make great things happen off-screen, in family and personal life, and we also make things happen fantastic on-screen, as you noticed. We’re good."
But Matt is more than just a colleague for Karen; she also said he is "a true friend" to her. "He’s like family. He came to my mother’s funeral," Karen shared. "I wasn’t on this show when I met Matt. I was a mother in Potomac, and he needed some advice and I gave it and he never forgot it. And what makes him a true friend is that friendship continued to grow even when I got on this platform."
RHOP fans should probably expect to see a lot more of Matt in the future, according to Karen. "We work well together, and he respects my drive and my push and he makes sure that those things are in place and we grow from there. We continue to grow every day," she said. "Matt’s not going anywhere."
