He revealed as much during Southern Charm Season 9, Episode 3 on September 28, explaining to Craig Conover that the situation actually reminds him of something that happened several years ago with Chelsea Meissner.

Shep Rose's Suspicions About Austen Kroll and Taylor Ann Green
In case you need a refresher, Jarrett "JT" Thomas repeatedly questioned Austen about his close relationship with Taylor on Southern Charm Season 9, Episode 2. Austen, for his part, said multiple times that he and Taylor were just friends. Taylor has maintained the same — until the latest episode of Southern Charm, that is. Shep was still in the dark, but ultimately very suspicious. As he put it in a confessional interview when recalling Austen's reaction to JT's questions, "Austen wouldn't hold up in an interview room if he was accused of a crime. If I were a juror, I would not be inclined to find him innocent, let's put it that way."

Craig was equally suspicious, alleging, "I know multiple girls that I used to date that [Austen] went and slept with after. And I found out years later."
Responded Shep, "So do I. Remember Chelsea? She and I were hanging out, I left for that weekend, and he moved right in."
The show then flash-backed five years to Shep confronting Austen.
Shep also noted in a confessional, "There's a history of Austen wanting what I have, and sometimes it feels personal. It's almost like toys in a sandbox. 'I want the toy you have.' Well, there's three toys. 'No, yours.'"

Later on in the episode, Shep expressed his concerns to Olivia, telling her, "I'm having some big questions about Austen's trustworthiness."
Olivia admitted that the idea of Austen and Taylor being more than friends made her "stomach turn a bit even thinking about it," so she later decided to ask Taylor for herself about the rumors.
