The Most Bizarre Oscars Red Carpet Moments of All Time
From fashion fails to sibling makeouts, these are the Oscars moments we can't forget.
Let's be honest: The actual Academy Awards always end up going on too long and are sometimes more boring than fun. The real crazy, OMG-worthy moments always go down on the red carpet. From regrettable fashion choices to drunken (and even high) celebrities, we’re looking back at all the insanity from years past. And, it’s getting us super excited for what’s to come at the 2017 Oscars show on Sunday night.
1. Bjork Dresses Like a Swan
It seems 2001 was a pretty trippy year for Bjork, AKA Iceland’s quirkiest singer. She got rave reviews for starring in the film Dancer in the Dark and her track “I’ve Seen It All” from the film’s soundtrack was nominated for Best Song. Now, no one expected Bjork to show up in say, a demure gown — but she turned heads when she waltzed the red carpet in a tutu with a dead looking swan wrapped around her neck. She certainly got points for creativity as she even squatted and proceeded to lay a golden egg on the carpet.
2. Sacha Baron Cohen Throws the (Fake) Ashes of Kim Jong Il All Over a Stunned Ryan Seacrest
In 2012, Sacha Baron Cohen was promoting his movie The Dictator and wanted to show up on the Oscar red carpet in character. But because lines are often crossed with Sacha, the Academy initially did not want him to do this. Then they changed their mind, and we’re sure they instantly regretted it. Why? Sacha showed up in full Dictator garb, holding an urn said to contain the remains of Kim Jong II with sexy military assistants on either arm. Explaining to Ryan Seacrest that it was his friend Kim Jong II’s dream to “come to the Oscars and be sprinkled over the red carpet and Halle Berry's chest again,” Baron opened the urn and spilled its contents (which was only pancake mix, by the way) all over Ryan’s dapper Burberry suit. The host gets props—he was understandably upset but managed to hold it together on camera.
3. Angelina Jolie Makes Out with Her Brother
No, “brother” isn’t a euphemism for anything else — Angelina Jolie’s actual brother, James Haven, was her date to the 2000 awards when she was nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category for her role in Girl, Interrupted. Everyone thought it was lovely that she opted to bring her brother as her date — until they started kissing out in the open, right there on the carpet. And we can’t forget how she told the crowd, “I’m so in love with my brother right now,” when she took to the podium after winning later that evening. Don’t know about you, but we still need a cold shower every time we hear this story.
4. The Creators of South Park Drop Acid and Dress in Drag
How in the world will anything ever top the 2000 red carpet? Jaws will never drop quite the way they did when South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone arrived. You see, Parker was a nominee in the Best Song category (for “Blame Canada” in the South Park movie) and brought his pal Matt as his “date.” And when it came to their formal attire, they couldn’t just contact, say, Armani for a tux. Nope. Instead, they decided to dress in drag — specifically as Gwyneth Paltrow in the pink Ralph Lauren dress she wore to the 1999 Oscars and Jennifer Lopez in the infamous, barely-there Versace dress she wore to the Grammys. But wait, it gets better — the pair has since admitted that they dropped acid in the limo and were tripping during the whole bizarre experience.
5. Anne Hathaway Snubs Valentino
Anne Hathaway’s amazing relationship with designer Valentino is no secret — he even custom designed her wedding dress. So in 2013 when she was nominated for an Oscar in the Best Supporting Actress category for her role in Les Miserable, it was expected that she’d sparkle in a Valentino gown. In fact, Anne’s team even put out a press release confirming it. But alas, she wore a pale pink Prada gown, shocking fashion industry insiders as she arrived on the carpet. Why the switch? Rumor has it that Anne found out with hours to go that her Le Miz co-star Amanda Seyfried was also wearing a Valentino gown that was rumored to be way too similar. But had Anne decided to stick with Valentino, her nipples never would have gotten their own Twitter account.
6. George Clooney Shows Up Drunk
The always dapper and always charming George Clooney was nominated in the Best Actor category in 2010 for his role in Up in the Air. As legend goes, he just knew in his gut that he wasn’t going to win, which he did not — the honors went to Jeff Bridges in Crazy Heart. So, what do you do if you’re George? You still show up and you still act gracious, but you also bring along a flask of whiskey, get noticeably drunk, and let the world know you’re only there to have some fun.
7. Angelina Jolie's Leg Makes a Scene
In 2012, Angelina Jolie became the talk of the red carpet in her show stopping, black Atelier Versace gown. What really had everyone gawking, however, was the way her super toned, right leg peeked out of the dress’ thigh-high slit. Angelina enthusiastically showed it off, clearly proud of her perfect appendage. Within minutes, her right leg had a Twitter account (appropriately titled Angie's Right Leg) and was the subject of tons of memes while the world wondered if her left leg felt left out. Truth be told, it was (and still is) a stunning body part.
8. Dakota Johnson Throws Shade at Mom Melanie Griffith
There’s no one you can roll your eyes at and call out quite the way you can your mother. And it doesn’t matter where you are or who your mother is: If she’s annoying you, you’re gonna let her know — even on live TV during the Oscar’s red carpet. In 2015, Dakota Johnson and mom Melanie Griffith had the most awkward, uncomfortable exchange ever after Melanie basically told Dakota she wouldn’t see her in 50 Shades of Grey since it would be “strange” because of, you know, the BDSM and sex scenes. And Dakota was not too happy to hear that her own mom was boycotting her work. Watch it all go down here.
9. Celine Dion Gets Her Bizarre Look Backwards
In 1999, Celine Dion showed up in a white Dior suit with the jacket on backwards. She also wore a fedora and rhinestone studded sunglasses. Needless to say, this daring attempt to make a fashion statement failed, and the bizarre look has since gone down as one of the worst in Oscars red carpet history. But, we must hand it to Celine — she owned the suit and didn’t take herself too seriously. But honestly, how could she with a backwards jacket on?
