Joanna Krupa: Why I Decided to Freeze My Eggs
The 'RHOM' star gets personal about her decision to start a family.
Joanna Krupa freely admits that she and husband Romain Zago are not ready to have kids yet, but that doesn't mean that the pitter-patter of little infant feet is not on her mind. The Real Housewives of Miami star recently made the decision to freeze her eggs in order to revisit the idea a couple of years down the road, she's revealed.
"I've been thinking about freezing my eggs for about two years now and it wasn't until one of my best friends had a tough time getting pregnant," Joanna told People while she allowed them to follow her with cameras to one of her doctor's appointments. "Her situation had me really thinking, I don't want to regret two, three years down the line when I'm trying to have kids. In case for some reason I would be infertile, I would never forgive myself."
We're not ready to have kids at this moment...It's safe to have a security blanket.”
The procedure, which has become much more popular and common in recent years, involves Joanna getting hormone injections so that her ovaries work overtime to produce more eggs. Ultrasounds are then used to identify the healthy eggs, which are then harvested and frozen for future use. Common side effects might include about 2-5 pounds of weight gain which the doctor assures Joanna is all water retention that will disappear as soon as the eggs are out. "I'm also worried about hormone injections," Joanna joked. "If I'm going to be crazy, if I'm going to drive my husband nuts."
On her way to completing the procedure, the Polish supermodel says she feels really good about her decision. "I know it's a responsible decision at this time in my life," she explained. "We're not ready to have kids at this moment and I think it's just safe to have a little security blanket in the future because you never know what the future holds and I don't want to have any regrets."
