Max Dubrow Reflects on Coming Out: "I Didn't Want to Be Defined by Whatever Sexuality I Am"
The Real Housewives of Orange County alum Heather Dubrow and her daughter opened up about how the experience has inspired a new way to help LGBTQ+ teens.
When Heather Dubrow’s 17-year-old daughter, Max, came out as bisexual in June, The Real Housewives of Orange County teen wasn’t expecting to have as much as an impact as she did. In an interview with Us Weekly, Heather recalled telling Max that her announcement “may get a little bit more attention,” than she initially planned for.
Months later, Max is reflecting on how coming out has given her the ability to help LGBTQ+ teens.
“I didn’t really expect for my coming out to be as big as it was, because I didn’t really know what to expect. I was going to put it on my Instagram and call it a day…It kind of became a bigger thing than I expected,” Max told PopCulture. “I didn’t want [my sexuality] to be my ‘brand,’ and I didn’t want to be defined by whatever sexuality I am. I’m sure people in the LGBTQ+ community understand that.”
After receiving messages from followers who were looking for advice, Max decided to create her own podcast, I’ll Give It To You Straightish.
“If I had someone like me before I came out, it would have been a hell of a lot easier,” she said.
“I love that her response to the whole thing was, ‘I want to help other people, how can I help other people be able to come out to their family or live their truth or talk about mental health?’” Heater said to Us Weekly. “I just love that she’s learning how to use her voice. I’ve always loved public speaking for young kids.”
