Captain Glenn Shephard Sheds New Light on the Drama with Chef Cloyce: "Watching It Back..."
Captain Glenn Shephard opened up to The Daily Dish about Chef Cloyce Martin's recent struggles on Below Deck Sailing Yacht.
Captain Glenn Shephard is ready to unpack all of the Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5 drama involving Cloyce Martin.
The charter season thus far has been a bit bumpy for the chef, and on Episode 4, Glenn had a stark warning for Cloyce: "Keep in mind professionalism." Not only did the captain take issue with Cloyce skipping lunch prep to go on an excursion with guests, but Daisy Kelliher also raised concerns after Cloyce served their guests a store-bought birthday cake that looked, in her words, "like a pile of dog sh-t."
"We can't serve that," Daisy declared as the cake fell apart. "He tried to take a shortcut. He was being lazy. He orders a sh-tty cake, microwaves it...It's horrific."

Although Glenn doesn't remember the specifics of that cake incident today, he recently told The Daily Dish what he thought of Cloyce purchasing a dessert instead of making it.
"Generally speaking, no, we don’t want to buy a cake," Glenn said during the October 22 interview. "We want to make a cake. That’s why we have a chef." However, he explained, there are exceptions to that rule.
"In some circumstances, maybe it’s not realistic," he said. "So sometimes you have to cut corners."
Glenn Shephard Weighs in on Cloyce Martin and Daisy Kelliher's Season 5 drama
Glenn has watched this season as Daisy and Cloyce have butted heads over meals and service. So when Daisy had a direct conversation with Glenn about it during Episode 4, he was happy to be in the loop.
"I want her to keep me informed," he told The Daily Dish. "I don’t want these things to brew under the surface without me being aware of them."
However, given his "style of management," Glenn also noted, "I’m happy for her to approach Cloyce and try to work things out amongst themselves before I have to get involved."
"I like the departments to work things out between themselves if they can," he added. "I think it makes for a stronger team when they do it on their own [rather] than me come in and lay down the law."
Cloyce and Daisy struggling to find their footing doesn't exactly come as a surprise to Glenn. "This same thing applies whether there’s a camera there or not. It’s par for the course. It’s always a little bit of a struggle between those two departments," he explained. "They both want to impress the guests but they’re coming at from different angles. One is all about presentation. One is about the food. It should be about the whole package."
"We always try to get there in the end, but sometimes we have to figure each other out," he continued. "Especially when you have a chief stew that it’s their first time working with a new chef. It’s not uncommon to have growing pains like that."
How does Glenn Shephard feel about chef Cloyce Martin today?
Although Glenn has had his doubts about Cloyce throughout Season 5 thus far, viewing the show has given him a new perspective on the chef.
"Watching it back, I’m quite impressed by Cloyce," Glenn said. "I think he’s a real character."
Noting Cloyce "wants to impress" his fellow crew members and guests, Glenn shared why he thinks Cloyce has stumbled a bit thus far in the season in terms of service and his dynamic with Daisy.
"You could chalk it up to maybe a lack of experience. Not experience in cooking, but maybe on superyachts where things can go wrong like that," Glenn shared. "But overall, I’ve been pretty impressed by Cloyce. I think he carries himself well."
