Aesha Scott and the Deck Crew Slam Bosun Iain Maclean's Management Style: “No Leadership”
The Below Deck Mediterranean crew members aren't pleased with the bosun while planning a beach picnic.
Work relationships are complicated. Especially when you're new to a team and just feeling out the dynamics. In a new preview for Season 9, Episode 4 of Below Deck Mediterranean, some of the crew members aren't delighted with bosun Iain Maclean's leadership style — and they make their issues known.
The drama all starts when the deck crew is tasked with setting up an Olympic games-themed beach picnic party for the guests. In the clip (you can watch it above!), Iain talks to Captain Sandy Yawn about the afternoon's plans and how setup will work.
"You know, the bosun obviously can help them set up the beach picnic. You approve it. But then they need to come back on board. If something goes wrong, I need someone who knows what's going on. It's a safety thing," explains Sandy.

Next, Iain makes more plans for the picnic with Aesha Scott and chef Johnathan Shillingford. "Have you come up with games?" Aesha asks Iain, receiving a "No."
"I asked if we were coming up with games and the Captain told me the primary will tell us," Iain explains.
The chief stew suggests he still come up with "a couple."
"Yeah, Sandy said [primary guest] Gigi [Fernandez] will know what she wants. But that doesn't mean that she's supposed to set it up for you and plan everything," Aesha says in a confessional. "I think he just heard Sandy say that and thought, 'Sweet, free pass.'"
While chatting with Joe Bradley and Gael Cameron, Iain says he won't be around to help set up the picnic, instructing them to handle it.
"For games, you guys get creative," he says. In an interview, he adds that he's a bit nervous since there was no time to scout out the picnic location. However, he notes that he trusts his team and doesn't want to micromanage them.
Joe Bradley, Gael Cameron, and Nathan Gallagher react to Iain Maclean's management style
With the guests excited for "beach time," Joe and Gael are then sent to the island to prep. When they ask for water, Iain tells them they can find it on the island, leaving without helping them carry the piles of supplies to their chosen locale. As they trek back and forth, they discuss their boss.
"It's going to be a tough day," says Joe, while Gael responds that Iain "knows how much stuff he dropped us with."
After a bit more chatting and a decision to just make things smooth for the guests, Joe says that it's "bad management."
“There’s no leadership at all," he added in a confessional. "Iain could have helped. We’re tired already.”
While he's not participating in setup, deckhand Nathan Gallagher isn't immune to the drama. At the very end of the clip, we see him get a bit agitated after Iain explains where he should find some trolleys.
"If this is going to continue, with Iain micromanaging, I know I won't be happy," Nathan says.
How will the picnic turn out? Will everyone work together as a team? Find out when Below Deck Mediterranean Season 9, Episode 4 airs on Monday, June 24.
