Christian Siriano Shows How He's Making Masks for Hospitals from His Home Studio
The Bravo's Project Runway mentor and his team are practicing "extra caution" while working on masks for hospital and healthcare workers.
Within the past couple weeks, fashion stores and factories have been forced to go dark as coronavirus (COVID-19) cases continue to appear globally. However, this past weekend Christian Siriano and his team found themselves back in the studio and in front of their sewing machines for an important mission.
After New York Governor Andrew Cuomo reiterated a need for masks, gloves, and gowns during a press conference on March 20, the Bravo's Project Runway mentor directly offered the governor his assistance on Twitter. Since then, Christian and his team of seamstresses have been hard at work churning out masks for hospital and health care workers.
On March 20, Christian shared a first look at his mask prototype. In the Instagram clip, an employee modeled the mask, which provides fitted coverage around the nose and mouth areas.
"We will be making a few versions of this in order to help as many people as we can. Here is the process so we can get a perfect fit," he captioned the post.
Christian and his team aren't going at it alone, either. The designer, who is currently working from Connecticut, has been receiving donations to help his efforts. In an Instagram Stories clip posted on March 23, Christian offered a peek at his team's progress.
"Thank you everyone who is donating and my entire team for working so hard," he captioned the clip in which he panned across tables full of fabric masks and seamstresses sewing away.
Christian and his team have been practicing "extra caution and maintaining distance with whatever they can" at work. The team members all wear masks of their own while at the studio and have been getting creative when it comes to their workflow, using items like ropes and chairs to pass around materials.
