Every Groundbreaking Look Christian Siriano Designed for the 2019 Met Gala
The Project Runway mentor created the most incredible designs for Elaine Welteroth, Janelle Monae, Laverne Cox, and more.
Last night, Lady Gaga made a legendary entrance at the 2019 Met Gala thanks to an outstanding four-in-one ensemble designed by Bravo's Project Runway's own Brandon Maxwell. But Maxwell isn't the only Project Runway cast member who created unforgettable pieces for the iconic fashion event — Christian Siriano also curated several show-stopping designs for the evening that were true works of art.
Each one of Christian's masterpieces perfectly embodied the 2019 theme, Camp: Notes on Fashion (a reference to writer Susan Sontag’s famous 1964 essay Notes on Camp), in its own unique way.
Let's take a closer look at his trailblazing craftsmanship, shall we?
Janelle Monae
All eyes were on Monae as she stepped on to the pink carpet in this winky ensemble. Not only did Christian's custom design slay the theme, which basically means to be as extra as you please, but it also paid homage to the singer's signature style: often a mix of androgynous pieces and bold tuxedos.
And if the dramatic pink skirt emblazoned with an abstract face and the toppling hats weren't enough, Christian added even more theatrics to the piece with a moving component. The eye with fluttery lashes on her top was motorized and actually winked as Monae made her way down the pink carpet.
Elaine Welteroth
The Project Runway judge stunned in a floor-length gown with dramatic tulle sleeves and lace detailing, courtesy of her friend and fellow Project Runway mentor, Christian. The innovative designer dubbed the look "gothic ballerina chic."
Laverne Cox
Cox has been a longtime supporter of Christian, so it makes perfect sense that the designer would have the honor of dressing the OITNB actress for her first Met Gala. For Cox's marvelous debut, Christian designed a custom black dressed filled with ruffles from top to bottom. Cox told E! that she's "never done a big shoulder moment" and she was inspired by 1950s and 1960s Balenciaga and architectural design.
Michael Urie
Another wow moment from the pink carpet was Michael Urie's gender-fluid ensemble, courtesy of Christian. The half-pink-tulle-ballgown-half-pinstripe-suit made a powerful statement. "You can be your own prom date no matter who you are!" Christian captioned a photo of Urie in the design on Instagram.
Ryan Murphy
Ryan Murphy's 2019 Met Gala look was the ultimate tribute to Liberace. The producer teamed up with Christian to create this custom, bejeweled orange tux and matching cape for the event. The next-level cape took two months to make, People reports.
We bow down to you, Christian!
