Christian Siriano Created the Gender-Bending Oscars Look EVERYONE Is Talking About
The Project Runway mentor raised the bar on men's red-carpet fashion — and decked some of his favorite ladies in gorgeous gowns, too!
Christian Siriano is the go-to designer for many celebrities looking to stun on the red carpet. And for the 2019 Oscars, the Project Runway mentor created a look that irrevocably raised the bar on men's fashion for awards shows. Keep scrolling — we guarantee you've never seen anything like this before.
Actor and singer Billy Porter interviewed celebs as they arrived at the show, and tapped Christian to design his look. "I’ve always wanted to work with [Christian]," Porter told Vogue. "I got this Oscars gig, and at his party after the [NYFW] show, I just dropped it in his ear and said, “Do you think you’d have time to make me a gown?” And he said, 'AAAAA-BSOLUTELY.'”
Yes, Porter asked Christian to design him a gown, not a tux. The Pose star explained: "Now I’m in a space where, being on Pose, I’m invited to red carpets and I have something to say through clothes. My goal is to be a walking piece of political art every time I show up. To challenge expectations. What is masculinity? What does that mean? Women show up every day in pants, but the minute a man wears a dress, the seas part."
The seas parted indeed for Porter's ultimate look, which combined a tuxedo-style top with a full ballgown. Check out the stunning design:
Fun fact: In a Project Runway-style twist, Christian actually had only one week to design the jaw-dropping, paradigm-shifting look. And that's not the only work the designer had leading up to the Oscars. (Or shall we say werk?)
