Janelle Monae Says "Pride Month Is Every Month for Me" After Attending First Pride Festival Since Coming out as Pansexual
"It was so incredible," Janelle Monae said of her day at New Orleans Pride.
Janelle Monáe told the world that she identifies as pansexual just a year ago, and now the singer has celebrated coming out at her first-ever Pride festival.
“Pride Month is every month for me,” the singer told PEOPLE, revealing that she just attended her first Pride festival in New Orleans.
“It was so incredible, people were so happy," she told the publication. "The thing that made me really teary-eyed was seeing young black kids with their moms there. Their moms brought them and were standing by their sides... Being able to see that community at Pride and in New Orleans, to see them celebrating, dancing, laughing, just not having a care in the world for those two hours I was there was just a sight to see."
Above all, Janelle recognized that Pride is an event for everybody.
"I encourage everyone, even if you’re not a part of the LGBTQIA+ community to go and experience that joy," she said.
Sounds like she's on the same page as people like actress Gabrielle Union, who believe that bringing your kids to a Pride event (as she recently did with her 11-year-old stepson) is simply just "part of being a global citizen."
