Serena Williams Stuns in a History-Making Vogue Cover with Her Baby Daughter
This cover makes history in the most adorable way.
Serena Williams has decided not to compete in the Australian Open this year — but the tennis champ has the best reason for taking some temporary downtime from the court. With a brand new baby to care for, the new mom wants to devote more attention to her adorable daughter. And, the February 2018 cover of Vogue showcases just how graceful and gorgeous Williams looks in her role as mama.
The fashion glossy announced its newest cover star on January 10, with an Instagram post that gave a sneak peek of the forthcoming issue. In a striking shade of red that's perfectly suited to Valentine's Day, Williams holds Alexis Olympia Ohanian, Jr. in an arm that's decked with delicate golden bangles.
With her curly hair left flowing and loose, the athlete has a natural beauty look that leaves her cheeks flushed and her eyes sparkling — or maybe that's just her new-mom glow.
To pose for your first Vogue cover at three months old is no small feat, but Alexis proved her readiness for the task in a fetching white onesie. We have to know: did craft services for the shoot come stocked with Cheerios and pureed bananas?
The magazine congratulated its youngest ever cover star with a sweet salute on social media, and gave a peek at the babe in a second lewk: a white diaper. (SO on-trend for babies.)
For the story that accompanies the images, Williams chatted openly about her intense connection with the little one. "We’re not spending a day apart until she’s eighteen,” she joked. “Now that I’m 36 and I look at my baby, I remember that this was also one of my goals when I was little, before tennis took over, when I was still kind of a normal girl who played with dolls ... To be honest, there’s something really attractive about the idea of moving to San Francisco and just being a mom.”
Williams added: "But not yet."
