Black Christmas Trees Are In This Year... and We're Kind of Obsessed
Who needs a real green tree that's dead in a month when you can get a black artificial one that lasts forever and ever?
Last year, the white Christmas tree was the big to-do so, of course, the Christmas tree of the moment this year is… black?! Sure, it's a little morbid, but we do see many benefits to this year’s decorating trend.
For one, like the little black dress, everything will go with this tree. Think about it. Could there be a more neutral canvas for your prized ornaments to shine on? Did anything really go with the green anyway? We spend a fortune on lights, ornaments, and ribbons, just to cover up every inch that is green. So why be so beholden to tradition?
Maybe it's more the idea of owning an artificial tree that feels weird to you. Well, according to an American Christmas Tree Association survey conducted by Nielsen, 81 percent of the estimated 95 million American households with Christmas trees this year will display artificial ones. There are multiple reasons for this. First of all, according to Consurmerist, a subsidiary of Consumer Reports, prices of Christmas trees have skyrocketed the past five years due to droughts, shortages, and fewer growers. Secondly, it's better for the environment. While the resources needed for one natural tree are less than those needed for one artificial tree, the environmental impact eventually tips in favor of the artificial tree when you take into consideration that it can be reused year after year. Thirdly, you can get an artificial tree in any color you want!
