An Ode to Lauren Conrad: Here's How To Keep Your Eye Makeup Smudge-Free
Watching The Hills Anniversary special we learned so much. But mostly, that everyone cried. A LOT.
Ten years ago, those of us who are old enough to care were obsessed with The Hills. We pretended we were their friends (though we weren't nearly as cool as they were), and we bought into every last minute of the drama.
Last night, during The Hills' Anniversary Special, we learned that even though things weren't scripted (well, not exactly), a lot of those super dramatic moments were predestined by producers. So, if everything was kind of sort of planned, the series' stars could go into the experience with their makeup prepped for their world to fall apart. (No wonder everyone looked so pretty post drama!)
However, us mortals usually don’t know we’re going to have a cryfest before we have one, which means we should always go into situations prepped just in case.
Prep, says Vanessa Ungaro of Lauren+Vanessa, should include using an eye primer under our eye makeup to help build a stable foundation and then using a setting spray like the one from Urban Decay to most over your whole face. It’s really all about each layer, in its own right, being built to last. Just like Speidi. Here's exactly what to do:
1. Apply pressed powder onto lashes before apply mascara.
You would never do your nails without a base coat and the same rule applies with the aforementioned primer—and here. After you apply pressed powder onto the lashes: “Then apply a coat or two of mascara, then another layer of powder, then more mascara. The powder helps the mascara stay put through the worst crying jags!” says celebrity makeup artist Ramy Gafni.
Layer eye shadow formulas to keep eye makeup in place.
“Apply your powder shadows, then add a cream shadow (or Vaseline) on top to lock in color and make it smudge-proof,” says Gafni.
And, obviously, embrace waterproof makeup!
"I love the Make Up For Ever Aqua Martic Glide On eye shadow," says makeup artist Jessika Bekteshi. "Once it's on, that baby isn't moving. For the summer months a bronzy shimmer blended with a black on the outer edges for definition is a nice subtle day look. Curl your lashes and top them with a couple coats of Maybelline's The Falsies waterproof mascara and go watch any sappy movie without fear that your eye makeup will smear!"
But try to not cry, since this story has a happy ending: along with becoming a successful fashion designer and settling down with bona fide sweetie William Tell, LC is now hailed as the queen of the perfect cat-eye.
