Kandi Burruss Shares Why It's Important for Blended Families to Make Time to Travel Separately
The Real Housewives of Atlanta mom gets real about her dynamic at home and on the road.
Kandi Burruss and her daughter, Riley Burruss, just finished an epic adventure-and-food-filled trip to Japan and South Korea, while her husband, Todd Tucker, took his daughter, Kaela Tucker, on a wild European jaunt at the same time. That wasn't the original plan, The Real Housewives of Atlanta mom explained in her latest KandiOnline vlog; the separate trips were prompted by some last-minute work scheduling changes. But they all discovered that it was a really great way to have quality vacation time.
"We are a blended family and our girls were older when we got married," Kandi explained in the video. "It wasn't like we had little babies... we had big girls. So even though they were older when we met, they still want their one-on-one time with each of us. If you had years with your parent and then they get married, you still sometimes just want that feeling of you and them."
Kandi wasn't sure it'd be easy to travel with Riley because she said she loves to run around while Riley prefers to chill.
"What are we going to do when it's just the two of us and there's nobody around for a whole week?" she wondered.
Kandi ended up scheduling three or four events for her and Riley to do every day.
Luckily, they were fun activities, like exploring the latest Instagram food trends and driving around Tokyo while dressed as Pokemon characters.
Shortly after returning on the trip, Kandi dropped Riley off in New York to begin her summer internship, and then went back home to Atlanta, where she discovered another fortunate benefit of her blended family traveling separately: quality one-on-one time with her baby boy, Ace.
"I don't wanna say I didn't miss my husband," she laughed, "because I did miss my husband. But I enjoyed this little time with Ace and I; it was pretty cool."
