What Is Vanderpump Rules? Everything to Know About the Bravo Series
Here's the background on the RHOBH spin-off featuring Lisa Vanderpump.
Whether you've been watching since Season 1 — which premiered in 2013 — or jumped in on the chaos in Season 10 (which rocked the Bravoverse and beyond), no one can deny that Vanderpump Rules always keeps it interesting. In the 10 years that it's been on the air, the Bravo series has given us so much to talk about, and viewers have gotten to watch the cast both evolve and go through major life changes in that time.
Here's what to know about the Bravo series starring Lisa Vanderpump and her current and former restaurant employees.
When did Vanderpump Rules start?
The first season of VPR premiered on January 7, 2013. The series was developed as a spin-off of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, on which Lisa was a cast member at the time. (Lisa also serves as an executive producer on the spinoff show.) The show focused on Lisa’s West Hollywood establishment, SUR Restaurant & Lounge, and the lives of the bartenders and waiters, known as SURvers.
The Season 1 premiere of VPR debuted as a crossover episode with Season 4 of RHOBH, featuring a conversation between a then-RHOBH cast member and VPR cast member Scheana Shay, who'd once had an affair with said Housewife's ex-husband, Eddie Cibrian.
What is Vanderpump Rules about?
Vanderpump Rules follows the lives of the current and former SURvers and bartenders at SUR. And, when Lisa opened TomTom Restaurant & Bar in West Hollywood with Tom Schwartz and Tom Sandoval as co-owners, the series followed the inner workings of that establishment as well.
As a boss and mentor to the cast, Lisa is seen as the voice of reason on the show, and she often offers her wisdom on the drama. The series has detailed friendships, fallouts, relationships, breakups, marriages, divorces, cheating scandals, business ventures, the birth of children and more among the cast members.
What was the Vanderpump Rules Season 10 scandal?
Season 10 documented the revelation that Tom Sandoval had been cheating on Ariana Madix — his girlfriend of nine years with whom he owned a house — with their mutual friend and fellow cast member.
The cheating scandal was discovered in March 2023, after filming had stopped for Season 10, but the cameras quickly picked back up to capture the fallout of the situation and an additional episode was added to the end of the season. An emotional Season 10 reunion documented the first time some of the cast members had seen each other since the scandal unfolded.
Is Vanderpump Rules scripted?
Absolutely not! Vanderpump Rules is a non-scripted reality series that documents the lives of Lisa and her current and former restaurant employees.

What is the Vanderpump Rules theme song?
The theme song for the series is “Raise Your Glass” by Dena Deadly.
“I definitely neglected [that song] for a lot of years because my standard was the Grammys and so it was like, this is no big deal to me. Now, I have nothing but humility and gratitude for it,” the singer told Rolling Stone in May 2023 of the song’s popularity in relation to VPR. “People are enjoying it and joy is radical in these times. I’m just glad to be a part of that. I’m just so happy that people love it and are rocking out to it in the club.”
