Top Chef’s Dale Talde Hosting Philippines Relief Event
All about his full-blown foodie extravaganza to aid typhoon victims.
Top Chef’s Dale Talde is teaming up with fellow chefs and culinary luminaries to bring a benefit dinner, Taste 4 the Philippines, to the New York area. Talde conceived of the fundraiser after the devastating Typhoon Haiyan wreaked havoc in the Philippines. "It hits pretty close to home," Talde, who is Filipino, tells the Dish. "It’s directly affected some of the cooks [at my restaurant.]. Most of us here have family in the Philippines. Whether they were directly affected or not, it’s a small country so it touches you at any level."
Talde’s family, many of whom still live in the Philippines, are thankfully safe, but that hasn’t stopped him from mobilizing his foodie friends for a benefit dinner. Taste 4 The Philippines, which Dale is calling a tasting event and "old school Brooklyn party," will showcase chefs from around the New York area who are donating their time, talents and food to raise money. The event will take place on December 4th, from 7-10pm.
Among the amazing restaurants participating: Dale's own Talde, Pork Slope and Thistle Hill Tavern, along with Buddakan, Dinosaur BBQ, Du Jour Bakery, The Meatball Shop, Pig & Khao, Roberta's, Runa Tea, Toro NYC and more.
"All I’ve asked is that people bring something delicious that will feed 400 people," Dale explains. "To be honest, the food is secondary. We are trying to raise the most money and give 100% of the proceeds to World Vision."
The response from the culinary world has been "unbelievable," Dale adds. Chefs and organizations that are not able to attend the event have still been donating goods, like signed cookbooks, restaurant vouchers, and more, to be used in a silent auction.
"We’re working with the NBA, the Brooklyn Nets…It’s a real community feel," Dale says. And while this time of year is especially busy for restaurants, his foodie friends have responded generously with their support.
So what’s Dale going to be cooking up? Nothing’s been confirmed yet, but he says diners can expect something that stays true to his restaurant’s Asian-inspired theme.
