Hannah Berner Sets the Record Straight on if There Was "Overlap" With Her Now-Fiancé and Luke Gulbranson
The Summer House cast member clarifies when she started seeing Des Bishop amid the Season 5 drama with her ex.
Hannah Berner announced her engagement to Des Bishop earlier this month. While that news is no doubt happy, it may have come as a surprise to some Summer House fans since earlier in the current Season 5, it seemed like Hannah and Luke Gulbranson had some unresolved issues around the nature of their past relationship.
Hannah's Summer House roommate Carl Radke even went so far as to imply that there was "some interesting overlap" in her relationships with Luke and Des during an interview with Access earlier this month. “That’s just a blatant lie. It’s just a blatant lie. I think Luke started, like, trying to save face and it was pretty disappointing to hear,” Hannah responded to Carl's comments during a recent interview with Us Weekly. “No one was hiding anything. They all knew about Des the entire time. They knew when we became official. So that was very hurtful.”
During that same interview with Us Weekly, Des explained how his courtship with Hannah began. “We literally met just before she went into the summer house," he said. "Our relationship didn’t, like, begin until the FaceTimes got more serious as the time went on in the house. Initially, it was just a hookup before she went in."
We've started to see Hannah's phone calls with Des this season of Summer House with the Bravo's Chat Room co-host describing how the two first met in the March 11 episode. "Des is a comedian in New York City who slid into my DMs right before I got into the house," Hannah explained in an interview during the episode. "But I didn't do anything because I didn't know what was gonna happen with Luke, which was a mistake — big mistake."
Des recalled during a recent interview with ET that he "just couldn't wait" for this season of Summer House to end so that he and Hannah could be together, describing their FaceTime courtship as starting off as "exciting" to developing "an intense longing" and wanting to "see if this is a real thing."
However, those phone calls helped grow their relationship with Hannah confiding in Des about all the drama going down in the house. "He became my rock," Hannah said during that same interview with ET. "Calling him just felt so great. But I would normally cry the first 10 minutes on the call, then we would have a little phone sex, and then we would just talk about everything and anything. So if I'm calling this guy crying every night and he still is falling for me, I'm like, maybe this is meant to be."
Hannah also explained her emotions surrounding the situation with Luke this season. "I was crying not because I was heartbroken," she said. "I was crying out of frustration and anger after talking to Ciara [Miller] and realizing this person that was taking up so much of my time was lying about me and really did not care and wasn't the person I thought he was."
Des was actually very understanding when it came to Hannah's interactions with Luke this season. "People can have their perception about how she felt about Luke or not," he told ET. "Sometimes people ask me, and I'm like, listen, I don't care how much somebody is an ex. When you get stuck in a house with somebody, that's emotional turmoil. Whatever way you perceive that emotion to be, that's your business. But it's not easy to be just chucked into a house with somebody who you had previous feelings for and just control your emotions 100 percent."
Getting to know Des — even if it was only over the phone — helped Hannah move on. "I really think that as Des and I got closer on the phone at night, it was really easy for me to be like, oh, this situation is toxic," she said, adding, "and never looking back. And you'll see in the house that my actions definitely really changed towards Luke."
As for Des, he said that he knew it was only a matter of time before Hannah realized that there was something special developing between the two of them. "I was there chatting to her sometimes while she was in the house, kind of waiting for her to let go," Des shared. "I was, not arrogant, but I really felt like eventually she would realize that she needs to just let go and realize that this is the thing."
We'll finally get to meet Des officially when he hangs out with the Summer House crew later on this season. And let's just say that Hannah's house mates will have some interesting reactions to him.
