Are Southern Charm Savannah's Catherine Cooper and Lyle Mackenzie Still Together?
Find out what the future holds for the #SouthernCharmSAV couple.
Catherine Cooper and Lyle Mackenzie have been the will-they-or-won't-they couple of this season of Southern Charm Savannah. But it seemed as though we would finally have our answer during Monday night's season finale.
Lyle asked Catherine's father for her hand in marriage, and he very nearly almost sort of kind of proposed to his longtime love. However, the two shared an emotional moment as Catherine asked Lyle not to propose to her at the time.
Catherine recently told The Daily Dish that she was "surprised" to see all of this talk of marriage from Lyle in the season finale. Though she may have seemed hesitant for Lyle to put a ring on it, Catherine clarified that she just doesn't want to rush into anything. "It’s a big thing to move forward with when I think it’s important for us to have that conversation and to be on the same page. And we really hadn’t had a chance to talk about it," she explained. "You know, obviously with everything going on the past 10 weeks, there was a lot of, we just didn’t really have a chance to have the conversations that I feel like are necessary leading up to this big moment."
This Savannah relationship dates all the way back to when Catherine and Lyle were in high school. In fact, Catherine remembers first connecting with Lyle at a school dance. "He was just always the life of the party — I was obviously very drawn to that. And we just have so much fun together. It’s like, your best friend," Catherine gushed about Lyle. "And I think that’s probably one of the most important qualities in a relationship is that you can have fun together, that you can laugh and laugh at each other, so we do a lot of that."
But after high school, the couple grew up independently as they went off to college and lived their lives outside of Savannah, Catherine explained. "So we have not been together for 15 years. I’m like, everybody, let me get that clear. Because we would’ve driven each other crazy. So we have taken that time to grow independently, and I think that’s very important for your relationship is to be able to be your own person independent of — just repeating myself — your relationship," Catherine said. "So, I’ve gone and done a bajillion things, and he’s dated other people, as have I, but we’ve always kind of found our way back to each other. So there’s obviously something very special."
Though things were tense between Catherine and Lyle during the season finale, she said that they were eventually able to get their relationship back on track. "Everything’s good," Catherine said of where things stand between her and Lyle today. "I think that we’re finally on the same page, and now that we’ve had a break from all this filming, we can get into the natural, normal, daily things of a real relationship, living in the same city, finding a place to live. So everything is great, it’s a lot better.
And just because Catherine did not accept Lyle's proposal at that time doesn't mean she won't one day. "Yeah, sure, that’s definitely an end goal for any longstanding relationship," Catherine shared in regards to whether the couple is working toward marriage in the future. "But it’s not like big-time pressure or anything."
