Katie Maloney's Dating History: From Tom Schwartz to Post-Divorce Single Life
The Vanderpump Rules cast member has had highs and lows, including a marriage, a divorce, and dating again.
We’ve watched Katie Maloney go through a lot on Vanderpump Rules in the last 10 years, especially in her romantic relationship. When Bravo fans first met Katie in Season 1, she was dating Tom Schwartz, and the relationship certainly had its trying times. Still, the couple was able to resolve many of their differences, got engaged in 2015, and then married the following year.
After 12 years together, Katie filed for divorce in March of 2022 and it was finalized later that year. Now, Katie is living her best life while single—and having some “casual” flings along the way. Luckily, fans will get to see it all play out in Season 10, which is currently airing.
In the meanwhile, join us for a trip down memory lane as we reflect on Katie’s relationship history from 2011 until the present day. Read on for everything you need to know about her dating life, marriage, divorce, and post-divorce life.
When did Katie Maloney and Tom Schwartz meet?
Before we even met Katie on Vanderpump Rules, she was already in a committed relationship with Tom. Years later, Katie reflected on their first encounter — which happened in June 2011, thanks to their mutual pal, Kristen Doute — but it didn’t exactly go as planned.
"He had a girl with him, that was the funny part was that finally I'm meeting this guy that supposedly wants to meet me, that's so perfect for me, and he's got a girl with him," Katie recalled to The Daily Dish in 2017.
"The very first night there was no spark," Tom added, "But the second night I was introduced to her and given a little backstory, that's when it clicked."
When did Katie Maloney and Tom Schwartz start dating?
It wasn’t until a few months later, however that the pair went on their first official date. The pair attended a Vampire Weekend concert in September 2011, which Tom later told The Daily Dish was “romantic but fun.”
Tom Schwartz dumped a drink on Katie Maloney’s head in Season 2 of Vanderpump Rules
In Seasons 1 and 2 of Vanderpump Rules, fans got a front row seat to the ups and downs of Katie and Tom’s relationship — including several allegations of infidelity. A particularly infamous upset came in Season 2, when the cast went to Mexico for a friend’s birthday. Tom and Katie ended up arguing about her drinking, which culminated in Tom dumping a drink on her head and telling her “F-ck off, man.”
Later in the episode Katie revealed, "I have this relationship all wrong. This relationship is so … this relationship is f-cked up, man."
Tom eventually apologized and the couple moved on.
Tom Schwartz gave Katie Maloney a ring on a string in Season 3
At Scheana Shay’s first wedding — which occurred in July 2014 and aired in Season 3, Episode 16 — Tom gave Katie a gift: A promise ring on a necklace chain.
It was not well received.
“He pulled out this box, my heart stopped,” Katie recalled in a Bravo blog. “Was he going to pull out an engagement ring and propose to me at a wedding? As much as I have dreamed of a proposal, it never took place at someone else's wedding. Well, it was a ring, but it was attached to a necklace. Whomp whomp whoooommpp.”
She continued, “I understand he did put thought into the gift: He knew I love rose gold, and he even had it inscribed with my nickname 'Bubba Love.' Problem was that it was a ring attached to a string. At this point in our relationship, a ring should have strings attached, not be attached to a string.”
During the SUR 10th anniversary party, which aired in the Season 3 finale, Katie responded to Tom’s ring on a string with an ultimatum: She said she wanted to be engaged within in the next six months, or their relationship wouldn’t last.
When did Katie Maloney and Tom Schwartz get engaged?
In July 2015, Katie finally got the ring she really wanted: An engagement ring. Katie took to Instagram to share a closer look at the 2-carat pear-shaped champagne diamond, which was set in 14-karat rose gold.
Their engagement was featured on Season 4.
When was Katie Maloney and Tom Schwartz's wedding?
On August 17, 2016, the couple said “I do” in front of their family and friends in northern California. "I'm so happy to have married my best friend, and love that I finally get to call Tom my husband," Katie said at the time. "Celebrating with our closest friends and family has been nothing short of an amazing experience." Their beautiful ceremony was seen on Season 5.
Later that month, the couple jetted off to Moorea for their honeymoon, where they enjoyed plenty of time on the beach.
Katie Maloney responded to rumors that Tom Schwartz cheated on her again
In early 2018, Katie responded to rumors that her husband had kissed another woman. “It was just disappointing that we had been in such a good place. I mean, we went to hell and back before we got married, and essentially we’d had to burn our relationship to the ground, and once we had gotten married we’d really recommitted and were on such a good path together that I just would never have expected to hear that,” Katie told Us Weekly at the time.
Katie went on to say that Tom "does not recall anything” from that night “and could not even pick this girl out of a crowd." She also said that she believes that Tom genuinely doesn't remember anything happening with this woman.
When did Katie Maloney and Tom Schwartz get legally married?
Eventually, it came out that Katie and Tom’s marriage was never actually legal. "We got a marriage license... we got married we all signed it.. we sent it in.. we just never received our marriage certificate and when we called to investigate they said they never received our paperwork," Katie wrote on Twitter.
In July 2019, the pair hosted a second marriage ceremony in Las Vegas and made it official legally.

Later, in the Vanderpump Rules After Show, Katie revealed that the second wedding was actually a childhood dream come true for her. Above, she says, "I had forgotten about this until I had told my mom, and she goes, 'Katie, you always told me when you were younger that you were going to get married at Caesar's Palace in Vegas.' And I was like, 'Oh my God!' Dreams don't always look the way they look."
When did Katie Maloney and Tom Schwartz split up?
The couple announced on March 15, 2022 that they had decided to separate after 12 years together. The pair confirmed their split in two separate Instagram posts.

"After 12 years on an adventure through life together Tom and I are ending our marriage," Katie wrote. "Although we may be on different paths we will continue to love and support one another's happiness. Thank you for all the kind words and support."
Tom wrote, in part, "Wanted to clear the air on some rumors floating around. Katie & I are separating. I'm not quite ready to use the 'D' word [because] it's too painful. Yes my heart aches but I'll be ok."
Later that month, Katie officially filed for divorce on March 22. She then reflected on what led to her decision to end their marriage in an episode of her podcast, You’re Gonna Love Me.
"There wasn't some crazy fight that resulted in this. It was my decision, which was probably the hardest and most painful decision I've ever had to make," she said. "But the best and only way I can describe it is just waking up and having this voice that just became louder and louder."

When was Katie Maloney and Tom Schwartz's divorce final?
According to Us Weekly, Katie and Tom were officially divorced when judgment was entered on Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2022.
A month prior, the pair had addressed the divorce on Katie’s podcast.
“Divorce, no matter what… it still is a mindf-ck,” Katie explained, likening the process to a business transaction. Tom added that, in a divorce, everything gets “reduced to, like, a piece of paper that we sign and then it’s just over. … [It’s] the least romantic thing.”

Katie Maloney and Tom Schwartz at Bravocon 2023: "You look like a couch."
The former couple reunited on stage at the "SUR’ving Up the Latest With Vanderpump Rules: Presented by Lay's" panel at BravoCon 2023 on November 3. In response to a question about how he was doing, Tom said he"happy not to be spiraling anymore" after his divorce, which helped him "grow a lot" and turned him "a little introspective."
He then complimented his ex-wife: "Hi Katie, you look fabulous."
She responded: "You look like a couch."
During "STEW vs. SUR" panel, Katie revealed that it was something Tom had said about himself earlier in the day when discussing his jacket.
"Listen, I saw him this morning and he said 'My jacket looks like a couch.' So today, when he said 'you look nice,' I said he looks like a couch," she explained. "He walked right into that." (By the time Tom appeared on the Winter House panel, though, he'd changed clothes.)
That said, in response to a question about the status of their relationship, Katie said, "We're fine. We're fine. We share the dogs, so we talk about that. But I don't know, he really... I don't know."

"I think he, like, has a crush on you. It's very weird," Ariana said.
"He should," Katie quipped.
Katie Maloney and Tom Schwartz’s Love Triangle in Vanderpump Rules Season 11
If the teaser trailer for Vanderpump Rules Season 11 shows anything, it’s that Katie is not done with dating... and Tom isn't quite absent from her love life, either.
Season 11 — which premieres on Tuesday, Jan. 30 at 8/9c on Bravo — promises that there will be a lot in store for Katie as she continues to navigate her post-divorce life, give advice to her friends, dance at a club, and apparently engage in a love triangle with her ex.
In the trailer, Katie can be seen kissing a mysterious woman with pink hair — who also locked lips with Tom, who admits that he has never been in a “love triangle” before.
“I have a crush on a divorced couple,” the woman exclaims in the trailer.
“May the best man win,” Katie says in response to the situation.
