Jill Kargman Reveals How to Swear Creatively
The 'Odd Mom Out' creator talks about the autobiographical elements behind her new scripted comedy.
When viewers tune into Bravo's newest scripted comedy Odd Mom Out on June 8th, they can expect the same sort of wry observations that writer and star Jill Kargman is known for: sharp, unfiltered, and downright hilarious.
The show is about a quirky Upper East Side mom who finds herself at odds with the other wealthy, blue-blooded UES moms that her social circle consists of. "This is about someone who’s stressing and feeling like she’s doing everything wrong, which is the old me," Kargman tells W Magazine about the show's autobiographical elements. "I’m not so insecure about parenting now. I’ve found my groove…I’m 40, and I don’t give a s*** anymore."
Lara Spotts, Bravo's senior vice president of development, raves about Kargman's comedy chops and one admirable skill in particular. "Somehow, the way she swears is highbrow. I don’t know how she pulls it off," she says. "The really fun thing is when we have to go back to her and say that something she’s written won’t fly with Standards and Practices, she comes up with something 10 times more offensive that we can still put on the air."
Kargman herself compares the show to "a comedic version of a Dutch still life: It has all these beautiful, frothy things, but there’s a skull right in the middle." She says that ultimately, the series is an extension of her life philosophy. "A lot of people might define a life well lived by how much is in the bank. I feel like it’s how much you laugh."
