Every relationship has its ups and downs, and The Real Housewives of New York City’s Erin Lichy’s marriage to husband Abe is no exception.

Erin got real about a difficult moment in the marriage in RHONY Season 15, Episode 2, revealing that Abe made some financial decisions without consulting her, leaving her hurt and feeling “betrayed.”

To add insult to injury, Erin discovered the financial moves while she was still reeling from her mom Dorothy’s recent cancer diagnosis.

“There were some decisions that Abe made without discussing it with me,” she explained to producers. “But the problem was that the truth came out right in the middle of me dealing with my mom and everything that we’re going through, so I wasn’t able to lean on him because he betrayed me and I was furious with him and it just added so much more stress.”

Why was Erin Lichy mad at husband Abe?

Erin first hinted that the couple were going through a rough patch while she and Ubah Hassan were helping her mom shop for wigs to use during her chemo treatments.

“How’s everything with Abe? You guys are doing good?” Ubah asked.

“Yeah. We had, like, a thing. I don’t tell anyone,” Erin replied before breaking down in tears.

“I just needed him to be there for me this time, like with everything with my mom, and he just, like, piled it on. All this sh-t that like I didn’t know about,” Erin continued without giving her friend any specifics.

Erin was clearly still on edge when she sat down with Brynn Whitfield to try to mend their friendship after the two faced off in the season premiere.

“I really need support right now. I do. As you know, I told you guys about my mom. I don’t want to get too into it, but like she’s going through chemo. She wasn’t supposed to,” the real estate agent said through tears. “It’s rocking me. I’m not in a stable place at all.”

Fans finally learned more about what happened between her and Abe when the couple, who share three children, sat down for dinner at Dagon to rehash the low point in the marriage.

Erin revealed that Abe sold some bitcoin they owned years earlier without telling her. She unexpectedly stumbled on the secret after logging into their account earlier this year and realizing the money was gone.

“Bitcoin was high and I thought it was a good time to pay off a large chunk of our mortgage,” she told producers. “I was just excited to log into my account and see how much it had grown and then I go and see that it’s gone, so, shock. Major shock. And he sold it when it was much lower than it is now, so of course, I was very angry. You don’t do that without having a discussion, that’s what bothered me.”

It seemed that the financial secrets didn’t end there, as Erin explained to Abe at the restaurant.

“The worst part was that you had sold it years ago and that’s what was so upsetting,” she said.  “You f-cked up and then that spiraled into learning all the other sh-t that you’ve been hiding from me.”

As Erin explained, the couple also had “some other bills” from a former handbag business that she believed were already handled that still hadn’t been resolved.

Abe Lichy on Financial Worries

For his part, Abe insisted he hadn’t made the money moves with any malintent.

“When I hide things from you, it’s obviously not coming from a malicious place, but I get why it would piss you off,” he told her.

Abe explained to Erin that it was just something that spiraled out of his control.

“It starts with one thing and then it’s like OK, well, now I’m going to patch this up and then do some f-cking patchwork, like it just becomes this pattern,” he admitted. “I still feel terrible.”

Erin confessed during the heartfelt conversation that finding out about the money moves even caused her to question the marriage at one point.

“I am a successful woman and I deserve to be treated like a partner,” she told Abe. “You held so much from me, like a few months ago you could have asked me if we were going to be OK and I wouldn’t have known.”

Abe told producers his decision not to tell his wife about the financial worries came from a protective place.

“I didn’t feel like my wife didn’t deserve to know something, I just didn’t want to add to the stress that she’s dealing with in her life,” he explained. “If you’re together with somebody, there’s that inclination to protect them, but, in the long run it’s not the right thing to do.”

Since Erin discovered the secrets, Abe told her that he has made an effort to be better at “real-time communicating,” and that’s something Erin has already noticed.

“I know you are, which is why I’m still sitting here in front of you,” she replied.

Luckily, the couple seems to have weathered the storm together and are now looking toward a brighter future ahead

Erin stressed that one critical aspect of the marriage going forward will need to be being more “communicative” with each other.

“I mean keep working on it because you need to continue to prove yourself and we’ll be OK,” she told him.
