The Below Deck Mediterranean captain opened up about her early days in yachting.

By Cynthia Robinson

On Season 9, Episode 9 of Below Deck MediterraneanCaptain Sandy Yawn was navigating some more laundry drama with Bri Muller, who continued to struggle with some of her duties. In an interview confessional on the episode, however, Sandy noted why she didn't want to fire Bri.

"The third stew is an entry-level position. Technically, it's Aesha's job to train them, but we're down a stewardess. Last season this boat ran with four stews," Sandy said in an interview confessional on the July 29 episode. "I can't put this all on Aesha; I want to invest in Bri."

As Sandy continued talking, old photos of her appeared onscreen. "Someone believed in me. I was newly sober," she said. "They took a risk with me, and sometimes my very best wasn't good enough...But that doesn't mean they fired me — and that's exactly what I'm doing with Bri."

"I'm not giving up on her," Sandy stated. "Someone didn't give up on me, why would I give up on her?"

Captain Sandy Yawn's Sobriety Anniversary

As Sandy noted in her interview in the July 29 episode (and in Below Deck Mediterranean episodes past, as you can watch in the video above), getting sober was a major part of the longtime yachtie's journey.

In August 2023, Sandy celebrated being 34 years sober in a triumphant Instagram post.

"[Thirty-four] years ago today I was broken, I felt hopeless and I didn't feel worthy to look up at the sky. I tried for years to stay clean [and] sober and on August 29th[,] 1989 something shifted inside of me," she began in the caption. "[A]nd for the [first] time in many years I was able to look at the sky and feel worthy, I felt hopeful, and I did the work that it takes to stay clean [and] sober."

She continued by nothing that "the work continues on a daily basis" in her journey.

"[A]nd all those days added up to my 34 years of continuous sobriety today! I feel fearless, energetic and motivated to continue on this journey," she added. "Thank you to all the people who have helped me throughout the years. I am grateful and I love you."
