The Below Deck Mediterranean captain opened up about feeling "broken" before her sobriety journey began.
Captain Sandy Yawn has a lot to be grateful for these days.
The Below Deck Mediterranean captain was there for her girlfriend, Leah Shafer, as she went through a health scare in July (she later learned that she was "cancer free"), and she just celebrated a major milestone in her sobriety.
The yachtie took to Instagram to commemorate a big anniversary in her sobriety journey. Find out what Captain Sandy shared by scrolling below.
Captain Sandy Yawn's Sobriety Anniversary
The Be the Calm or Be the Storm author posted a screengrab from Below Deck Mediterranean on her Instagram feed on August 29. The message, "That's right," was displayed at the bottom of the image, and Captain Sandy opened up about her sobriety journey in the caption of her post.
"[Thirty-four] years ago today I was broken, I felt hopeless and I didn't feel worthy to look up at the sky. I tried for years to stay clean [and] sober and on August 29th[,] 1989 something shifted inside of me," she began in the caption. "[A]nd for the [first] time in many years I was able to look at the sky and feel worthy, I felt hopeful, and I did the work that it takes to stay clean [and] sober."
She went on to share that "the work continues on a daily basis" in her journey.
"[A]nd all those days added up to my 34 years of continuous sobriety today! I feel fearless, energetic and motivated to continue on this journey," she continued. "Thank you to all the people who have helped me throughout the years. I am grateful and I love you."
Sandy added hashtags for "sobriety," "hope," "life is good," and fearless" to close out the caption.

Captain Sandy Yawn's Sobriety
Back in January 2023, Sandy chatted with PEOPLE about how serious her alcohol addiction was before she got sober.
"Someone’s keeping me alive for a reason," she told the outlet. "I should have been dead 10 times over with the lifestyle I led."
Now that Sandy can reflect on her past battle with alcohol addiction, she wants to help others. It's the reason why she wrote her book, Be the Calm or Be the Storm, and it's why she is so open with fans about her journey.
"I wanted to show people that you can change," she said. "There is hope, and if you are in the art of self leadership, anything is possible."
