See Cara Delevingne's Hair Transform For Each 'Suicide Squad' Appearance
Plus, learn which of these looks will be big for fall.
Cara Delevingne hit the press circuit for Suicide Squad in edgy looks that kept us guessing. One minute, the cheeky star was wearing messy, '90-style buns; the next, she channeled an old-school screen siren in vintage-inspired waves.
"The looks are actually strangely harsh, but in a good way," says expert Matt Fugate, Kérastase Paris Consulting Hairstylist. "Cara has a very interesting face shape and is not your typical 'beauty' girl. She is definitely more of a badass rock-and-roll girl who can pull off super edgy looks." But, can we pull these off? We asked Matt to weigh in on which styles to try at home.
1. '90s-Style Buns
Cara has spent the summer working with stylist Mariel Haenn. For an appearance in New York, the British beauty wore an Alexandre Vauthier jumpsuit over a mesh top, and hairstylist-to-the-stars Jen Atkin topped her head with two, loose buns. Makeup artist Romy Soleimani kept the star's face fresh and dewy—except for that alluring smoky eye.
The hair looks perfectly awesome, sure. But this look may not carry you through fall—or even through the month. "I would say the 90’s buns are not here to stay," Matt says. "This is more of a playful, edgy style that [works as] a one-time thing."
2. Braids
For another appearance, Jen gave Cara a tight braids, while Romy painted on an uber-dark '90s lip and dusted her eyelids with glitter. "Try to stay clear of are the big two topknots and the tight braids," Matt cautions. "These looks are definitely fun, but are extremely edgy. Cara is an edgy model and was attending the edgiest movie of the year, so she could get funky with the hair, but if you want to do these looks, you should tone it down a bit for everyday."
3. '60s Mod
Another day, another hairstyle. For this Suicide Squad-related outing, Jen gave Cara a '60s-inspired look. Romy did even more to capture the era with an expert cat-eye and pale-pink lips. Looks gorgeous, right? This look is green lit for almost anyone. "The 60’s hair is definitely popular and making a comeback," Matt says. "This style is big and voluminous with a modern twist. Take a volumizing texture spray like Kérastase VIP, and you can easily get this look at home."
To match this retro look, Cara wore a graphic, black-and-white look from Emanuel Ungaro's spring/summer 2016 collection, paired with stratospheric boots by Christian Louboutin.
4. Retro Waves
For the next act, Cara—dressed in Anthony Vaccarello—showed off a softer side of her gleaming tresses." I would say the waves and the deep side part of definitely easy looks to get at home," says Matt. "These looks are a little more feminine and soft. To recreate at home, just do a deep side part and then take your curling iron to create quick bends in the hair. You can create the bends wherever you want or start around the top of the ear as Cara does." So, how many of these styles will you and your #squad attempt?
