The Nude Lipsticks Seen on Vanderpump Rules' Brittany, Ariana, Stassi and More
Makeup artist Jared Lipscomb shares the nude lip colors he uses to keep his clients, the Vanderpump Rules cast, looking flawless.
You might have noticed that your favorite SURvers have been going nude on set a lot lately, at least when it comes to their lip color.
And it's no coincidence — just ask makeup artist Jared Lipscomb, who creates some of the most flattering beauty looks you've spotted on Brittany Cartwright, Ariana Madix, Stassi Schroeder, and more of the Vanderpump Rules cast (catch up on Vanderpump Rules here). “I love a nude lip!" he says. "There is a soft and understated elegance that it brings to any look; it’s never a distraction, always an enhancement.”
And nude hues perform another kind of enhancement too: “They make it so easy to cheat big lips!” says Lipscomb, who fills lips slightly outside their natural border to fake just the right amount of extra plumpness — a trick that works just as well on screen as in real life.
Picking the right nude lip shade, though, can feel a little trickier. But turns out, it all comes down to understanding your undertones. Lipscomb's trick: Look at the veins on your arms. Blue veins mean you have cool-toned skin. Greenish veins mean your skin is warm toned. “If you’re cool toned, check out nudes with pinks, peaches, and purple tones,” he suggests. “If you’re warm toned, check out warmer nudes with tones of orange, beige, and brown.”
Ahead, the five go-to hues Lipscomb uses on the ladies of Vanderpump Rules.
Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Lips in ‘Charlotte Darling’
“This is my favorite liquid matte formula. I used it on Stassi Schroeder for the fun ‘90s supermodel-inspired look [in the image above]. It made her skin pop and enhanced her light eyes and hair. It’s lightweight, dries quick, but doesn’t dry out the lips. This shade is perfect for anyone with fair to medium skin and a warm undertone, since it’s a lovely beige tone.”
Tarte Glide & Glow Buttery Lipstick in ‘Bare Bud’
“I love this pink-toned nude for a pale, pouty look on Ariana Madix. [See a shot of her wearing it above!] The soft rose undertones complement Ariana’s complexion without washing her out. This cream formula is so nourishing on the lips but also packs the perfect punch of color. The formula is hydrating like a balm so it’s easy to wear all day to night. ”
Becca Glow Gloss in ‘Chocolate Geode’
“I am absolutely obsessed with this highly pigmented gloss. The entire Glow Gloss collection has many amazing shades for every skin tone, but the gorgeous 'Chocolate Geode' color, with its rich bronze tone featuring copper and gold specks, is my favorite gloss to use with deeper skin tones.”
Nars Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in ‘Bondage’
“I’ve been loving this perfectly camel-hued nude color on Kristen Doute! It works so well for medium to deep skin tones and perfectly enhances her natural lip color, while giving her lips a gorgeous matte finish. The iconic Velvet Matte Lip pencils are a favorite of so many makeup artists for obvious reasons: They’re easy to apply, long lasting, and have a soft matte finish."
Jane Iredale Lip Liner in ‘Nude’
“This brown-nude lip liner is one of my most used lip products. I adore how smooth it goes on. Sometimes I use this on the entire lip and just top with balm for an easy-to-wear look. This is a go-to for my favorite Shah, Mercedes. The brown tone perfectly defines her lips. This shade is very versatile and can create a fabulous ombré effect, especially when paired with MJ’s own liquid lip collection from Aniise Beauty.”
