Vikki Ziegler's Advice for #GG2D Couple Abby and Jake McCarthy

We asked our resident love expert and divorce lawyer, Vikki Ziegler to weigh in on one of the most shocking divorces of the year - Girlfriends Guide to Divorce’s Abby and Jake. As Bravoholics know, Abby and Jake’s relationship has been a rollercoaster of breakups, hookups, and (possibly) makeups. If anyone can handle this mediation, it’s Untying the Knot star and self-proclaimed challenge lover, Vikki Ziegler. Read her advice for Abby and Jake below!

Abby and Jake should enjoy this time where there are no emotional strings attached but tread likely on the legal front. If things end badly they still have legal battle over assets to endure. They should give themselves 60 days to see if their relationship can’t be repaired or not - if Abby or Jake feel as though the marriage is over then they he or she should file a complaint for divorce to end their marriage. If they think they CAN salvage their marriage they should enter counseling and give themselves four to six months to see if it will work. During that period of time, they should adhere as if they are still abiding by the terms of their agreement on the financial front but work on their emotional issues. Tough stuff but anything can be accomplished if they both work hard at it.

Make no mistake: marriage is hard work and anyone who tells you otherwise is either single or is trying to sell you something. Remember what Shakespeare once said: “The course of true love never did run so smooth.” Boy was he right. It is interesting that a marriage license can change the way a relationship is viewed - both from an emotional, financial and social perspective. Married couples need to put a high premium on the value and sanctity of their marriage and believe that they are each truly committed to its longevity. Happiness really depends on the support and commitment of two people who believe in the beauty of a partnership through thick and thin. If Abby and Jake can make the commitment again, they might just make it work. GOOD LUCK!
